Amit Shah pledges to resolve Manipur’s insurgency problems

Imphal, Mar 1: Union Home Minister, Amit Shah promised on Tuesday that all insurgency-related problems in Manipur will be resolved by holding talks with the insurgent groups and bringing them to the mainstream if the BJP is given another five years at the helm in the coming state Assembly polls.
“We have done a lot of work in Manipur in the past five years. Give us five more years. I am telling you, we will hold talks with all insurgent groups and bring permanent peace in Manipur, Shah said while addressing an election rally in Devi Mandop Lampak of Thoubal district
Shah said no Manipuri youths would be fired upon or have to go to jail.
“They will be brought to the mainstream and they will work for the development of the country’ and Manipur. We will secure the boundaries of Manipur and also ensure peace,” he said during the well-attended rally.
To buttress his point, Shah pointed out that in the entire Northeast, more than 9500 youths have laid down their arms and come to the mainstream.
“Be it Bodoland or the Karbi problem (in Assam), or (problems in) Tripura, the BJP government has solved all problems”.
He said in the next five years, narcotics smuggling would totally stopped. “We will undertake a huge drive to make Manipur a drug-free state”.
Shah said it was for the people of the state to decide whether they would opt for the Congress symbol that would bring back the era of bandhs, blockades and insurgency. On the other hand, If people opted the BJP’s symbol lotus, then they can usher in peace, stability and development.
Ridiculing former Chief Minister and Congress candidate from Thoubal Okram Ibobi Singh’s complaints about the hike in LPG prices, he said “During your rule, whenever there were blockades, price of cooking gas used to shoot up to Rs 3000 per cylinder, and petrol would soar to Rs 300 per litre. while flour was sold at Rs 100 per kilo”.
Continuing to take potshots at ibobi, Shah said during his Chief Ministerial tenure he ‘kept on knocking at the doors” of the Gandhi family, but could not get the inner Line Permit (ILP) system for Manipur.
“In contrast, the present Chief Minister N Biren Singh didn’t even have to go to Delhi. But just on the basis of his phone call, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave ILP to Manipur,” he said.
Shah said when he visited the state in 2015 and 2016 prior to the installation of the BJP-led government, there were only bandh and blockades, and insurgency problems, while the people had to fight for their basic rights.
“There were more than 600 bandhs and blockades during Congress rule, but not a single such disruption has taken place after the BJP came to power. Chief Minister N Biren Singh worked hard to bid goodbye to the days of bandhs and blockades,” he said. Taking a dig at the Gandhi family, which leads the Congress, Shah said; “In 15 years of Congress rule in the state, there used to be only one startup, that of the Gandhi family. But we have introduced a start-up policy, and 5477 start-ups have come up at an investment of Rs 200 crore”.Shah mentioned that the Modi government at the centre has provided a subsidy of Rs 56 crore to the state for the start-ups.
He promised that the central government would set up the Manipur skill development University within six months if a BJP Chief Minister is sworn in again.
Praising Biren for ensuring development and peace, and ending violence and corruption, the former BJP President said the state had an economy of Rs 21000 crore when Congress demitted office five years back. “The BJP Government has increased it to Rs 35000 crores”.
Respecting the role of women in Manipur, a woman has been made President of the state BJP unit, and every district now has one women police station, he said.
There were no railway lines in Manipur and the Modi government is taking up Jiribam to Imphal rail line ( 111 km) at a cost of Rs 12000 crore
There was a 272 percent increase in the number of tourists visiting the state, he said. Every village has been electrified and there is 24-hour power supply.
Thirty eight of the 60 Assembly constituencies of Manipur went to the hustings on Monday.
The 22 remaining constituencies will hold polls in the second phase on March 5. UNI NS SSP
