Early Times Report

Udhampur, Mar 1: Road connecting Godi village in Udhampur district remaining incomplete has put a question mark on the tall claims of development taking place in Jammu and Kashmir. Residents of Godi have to climb a 3-km hill from Udhampur to reach their homes.
According to the locals, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had sanctioned
Rs 159 crore for constructing this road in 2018 but during the past four years not even zero-kilometre road stretch has been completed.
“We were better off with our old road at least we were able to move. Now, no vehicle can reach our village. The bridge connecting our village to the other side remains submerged in water and it too has been closed by the Public Works Department,” locals said.
They said, “If the Centre has sanctioned so much money then where has it gone? We asked the contractor why he is not carrying out the work, he told us that PWD owes Rs 4 crores and till the money is not released the work cannot commence.”
They said that this road caters to twenty panchayats which have a population of 60,000 souls.
“If someone falls sick, there is no chance of an ambulance reaching our village and PWD closing the road leading to the bridge has added to our woes. The helmsmen have left us in lurch. They seem least bothered about the difficulties we are facing,” they added.
