Mehbooba’s meeting with Sonia fuels speculation of grand alliance in J&K | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 19: Even as Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has termed her meeting with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi as a “courtesy call”, this development has fuelled speculation of a grand alliance of all non-BJP parties before assembly elections in J&K. As reported earlier by the Early Times, Mehbooba Mufti has decided to sacrifice her own party’s interest to defeat BJP in J&K. Mehbooba Mufti is agreed to accept veteran leader Dr. Farooq Abdullah as her leader to jointly fight next assembly elections in J&K. “During her recent visit to Jammu, Mehbooba Mufti has given clear directions to her party leaders they should concentrate only on the constituencies dominated by BJP”, sources said and revealed that the PDP president has informed Jammu based leaders that the party will fight assembly elections in alliance with arch-rival National Conference (NC). Highly placed sources said that aim of Mehbooba Mufti’s meeting with Sonia Gandhi was to convince the Congress president to join the grand alliance in J&K to defeat BJP. “Along with NC, the PDP president is also trying to rope in Congress party in the alliance to effectively fight BJP in Jammu province by putting a joint opposition candidate on all seats”, sources said. As reported earlier, Mehbooba Mufti met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi at the latter’s residence here on Monday. Mufti spent some time with Gandhi and is learned to have discussed the current political situation in the country with the Congress president. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader has said it is the Congress that has kept the country safe so far, alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants to create more Pakistans. Mufti became the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2016 with the support of the BJP, but the two fell apart and the coalition government could not complete its tenure. |
