Apples bear brunt of curfew in Shopian
9/23/2013 10:37:30 PM
Et Report

Srinagar, Sept 23 : Curfew for 15 consecutive days in South Kashmir's Shopian district took a heavy toll on the fruit industry of the area. Shopian is known for its apple in world over and a continued curfew over a fortnight has badly affected the industry. The farmers of the area say that this month is considered the best for harvesting but due to curfew no apples could be collected in the area. "From last 15 days we are locked in our homes, this is the peak time of our business and we were made to suffer in this period only," says a farmer.
These farmers complain that due to non-harvesting of apples they are rotting and damaging with the result the prices will also fall down. Apples after harvesting are exported to different parts of the country but as the fruits are getting damaged the dealers fear of getting low prices.
"We won't be getting good rates for our apples in Delhi mandi," says a fruit dealer.
The hopes of the fruit growers of the area seems to be waning as they maintained ,"now even if we export our fruits to outside state the markets would already be full of fruits from other parts of the country like Himachal Pradesh etc." "What's is the point of sending fruits now because we won't be paid desired amount, we put our life and blood into this but at the end we will be meeting disappoint only," says Ghulam Nabi, a fruit grower. The farmers of the area also say that they were seeing their fruits falling but couldn't do anything because of being caged into their homes.
"Troopers didn't allow us to move an inch outside in all these 15 days," adds Nabi.
The farmers hold government responsible for this loss. "Had they not imposed curfew so long we wouldn't be suffering this time," says a local. This move of government has been criticised by the different trade association and other stake holders of the valley. It is pertinent to mention here that living of most of the families in this area depends on fruit selling. The curfew in the area was imposed fifteen days ago when clashes broke out in the area after killing of five youth by troopers.
