Miffed Home Ministry seeks reply for low voter turnout | | | ET Report Jammu, Apr 26: The Home Ministry, which is gearing up for change of guard, angry over the spurt in violence in the Kashmir in the run up to elections, which resulted in low voter turnout, has sought detailed reply from the Government. The home ministry, which could be headed by the Goa Chief Minister, if Modi becomes the Prime Minister, has shot off a letter to the state Government seeking reply why no action was taken to stop poll violence and to stop poll boycott propaganda. "We had provided all the required forces. The state Government apparently deliberately fuelled the violence to ensure low poll turnout especially in areas where NC is weak. It has weakened the efforts of the Government of India to strengthen the democratic process in the Kashmir and negated many steps taken in the past," said a senior Home Ministry official, wishing not to be named. The Centre was hoping that there could be a major increase in the polling percentage in the Valley. It had received intelligence inputs that many youth were keen to cast their vote and voters were gearing up to exercise their franchise after watching developments in the rest of the country. "Everything was going fine. People's participation was quite healthy in elections rallies and there were no major disturbances. But just 48-hr before the polling the things changed. It can't be normal and someone must have set up the things. We have many inputs and action would be taken accordingly," said the Home Ministry official. The BJP has already made it clear that it will carry forward the approach of Vajpayee in Kashmir. It's important because it was during Vajpayees' time that in 2002 one of fair elections were held and it resulted in ousting of NC from the power which remained out of it for the six-year. "It will be first major test of the Modi, if he becomes Prime Minister, on Kashmir. If he doesn't take corrective action than it could have an impact in the coming Assembly elections and people have started making hopes from him there," said the Home Ministry official. |
