SRINAGAR, Apr 26: Much to the embarrassment of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference (NC)-Congress alliance candidate Dr Farooq Abdullah, the Union Health Minister has refused to campaign in central Kashmir. He has also hinted at going to Assembly polls alone.
People close to Azad informed Early Times that despite repeated attempts from NC leadership in general and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in particular, Azad has categorically refused to campaign for NC-Congress alliance candidates Dr Farooq Abdullah and Sharif-ud-din Shariq in their central and North Kashmir Parliamentary constituencies. Sources said that keeping in view the sanctity of relationship Ghulam Nabi Azad has with the families of Tariq Hameed Karra and Muzaffar Hussain Beigh of People's Democratic Party (PDP) he denied campaigning against them in their constituencies for Dr Farooq Abdullah and Sharif-ud-din Shariq of NC.
Also after reports about NC workers ditching Congress in Jammu division of Rajouri and Poonch areas by casting their votes and supporting People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates instead of Congress candidates in recently conducted ongoing Lok Sabha polls appeared in media, Azad expressed anger and conveyed the same to Congress high command with recommendations of going alone during the forthcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
"Omar Abdullah himself and other top brass NC leaders too used all means to motivate Azad for campaigning in Central and North Kashmir but of no use," sources said.
Omar and Farooq also feel ditched over Azad's speech in South Kashmir wherein he said `next time I will come to seek votes for Congress;.
Reports said Omar and his father expressed dismay after Congress workers voted for PDP in Shangas, Dooru, Noorabad and Kulgam.
