LOUD AND CLEAR: Defence Minister declares Modi's position on revocation of AFSPA
6/15/2014 11:07:56 PM
"Demand not accepted"
Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 15: The defence ministry has asked the state government not to raise the demand for the revocation of the Armed Forces Special Forces Act (AFSPA). The ministry has said this demand can't be accepted and met till situation improves.
"the State government has been categorical told not to raise this demand. It's a serious issue of national security and can't be used for political rhetoric. The government must also take it seriously that the Modi led government will not take such demand very lightly, if ever it's raised," said a senior defence ministry official.
According to sources, the Centre's view point was told in clear manner by the defence minister Arun Jaitley to the chief minister Omar Abdullah.
The Centre is mopping up all the intelligence and security apparatus to strengthen the internal security. The AFSPA is an issue on which Army has strong reservations and the Modi led government has decided not touch it, as Army is playing an effective and important role in counter-insurgency operations. "Jawans are dying in cross border firing. We need to raise their moral and respect them rather than lower it by such issues, The new government is very certain about it," the official said.
The CM who was very vocal about it is now very muted about. His comrade the former home and finance minister was supporting him on this issue. But, now with him out of the power and new government has serious security issues, the issue had been kept to back burners.
The State government has also been directed by the Centre to strengthen its internal security. IT has been told the that separatists may try to rake up this issue and cause disturbances and government should ensure that it is kept under order.
Omar Abdullah had tried to use this as an issue for some political gains. But the rout of the NC in the parliamentary elections has proved that it has very few takers.
