Old NC guards demoralized after recent statement of Omar about Dr Farooq
'Don't see any future of party with Omar'

SRINAGAR, July 24: Senior National Conference leaders and workers are in a state of shock these days after the working President of the party and Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah announced that party President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah would not contest the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state.
Omar's announcement has virtually demoralized the old guards of the party who don't see any future of the party with the present working President. These people believed that the party could have regained some ground only if Dr. Farooq takes over the charge of the party in the real sense. However, their hopes have been dashed by the recent statement of Omar.
"Omar has no charisma to lead the party and one cannot expect him to do wonders at the ground level. If Dr. Farooq would have taken over the charge then the things could have been different. We could have improved over the performance following the recent debacle in the Parliamentary elections," said a former legislator who wished not to be named.
The former legislator alleged that the mandates have been distributed after 'auctioning' and that no ground analysis was carried out before the distribution of mandates. He said the mandates are being given to the people who offer huge sum to the important office bearers of the party.
"In the past the mandate would be given to a person who has worked hard for the party. The commitment of a party man both as a legislator and as an ordinary worker would form the basis for the distribution of mandate. Those things don't matter now and it is the money power that is important these days," said the former legislator hailing from South Kashmir.
The former legislator said that Omar has failed to establish connect with the grassroot workers of the party. He said this would turn out to be an undoing for the party and for the working President as well. He added that people should not be surprised if the tally of National Conference seats goes down in this Assembly election.
In the meantime, Omar's announcement that his father would not fight elections has come a big relief for provincial presidents of the party. It was presumed that both the provincial presidents would be shown the door once Dr. Farooq is declared as the Chief Ministerial candidate of National Conference. The possibility is still there if Dr. Farooq continues as the party president.
"After the debacle in the Lok Sabha elections it was expected that both Nasir Aslam Wani and Devinder Singh Rana would be shown doors as Provincial Presidents of Kashmir and Jammu respectively. However, this has not happened and it may not happen since both Nasir and Rana have business relations with Omar," said sources.
Sources said that if the party President acts tough then both Nasir and Rana should count their days. They said that both the provincial presidents failed to deliver goods in Parliamentary elections and as such one cannot rule out their exit from Kashmir and Jammu divisions respectively.
