450 casual labourers in PDD without wages for 4 years | | | SRINAGAR, July 24: About 450 casual labourers in Electric Maintenance Wing of Power Development Department of Ganderbal district in Kashmir valley are without wages for last four years. These workers have been engaged by the Department from time to time to overcome shortage of staff in PDD and assist the field staff in maintenance and distribution system in the area were given assurances that their wages will be released in due course of time and their services will also be regularised after completion of seven years service in the Department. But for last four years they have not been paid wages. Protesting against the callous attitude of the authorities these casual labourers took to streets at Ganderbal yesterday and demanded immediate release of their wages so that they can celebrate the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr. The local leaders also joined the daily wagers demand and demanded immediate payment of their pending wages. The President of casual labourers Association accused the authorities of their callousness towards them. He also demanded their immediate regularisation. He said out of 450 casual labourers working in the Department Chief Engineer has forwarded a list of 170 casual labourers to civil secretariat for regularisation which is an injustice with the hapless people. Meanwhile Peoples Conference Ganderbal unit has extended full support to casual labourers in their struggle and warned to launch agitation in case their demands were not settled. Senior Party leader and trade unionist Mir Ghulam Rasool has sought immediate intervention of Chief Minister, Omer Abdullah who also holds the charge of Power Ministry to settle the issue. |
