Torrential rains create havoc in city outskirts; houses, shops damaged

Jammu, July 24: Several houses and shops damaged, road washed away and vehicular movement disrupted in torrential rain in Kangrail area of Jammu district in the wee hours of today. However, there was no report of any causality in the incident, sources said.
According to reports, heavy downpour flooded Kangrail village at city outskirts, some 15 kms from here, causing damage to many residential houses as well as shops. However, there was no report of any causality in the incident.
Official sources said following incessant rains past midnight water level of the nallah/Khad flowing through village Kangrail suddenly swelled forcing water to enter the houses in the village.
"Following heavy flow of water a portion of the road passing through the village, which is only link road connecting to main Jammu-Akhnoor road too was washed away early this morning, a local said.
"Due to flash floods thick silt got accumulated in the entire area making road slippery and blocked," local said while adding, "large number of houses and shops and business establishments have been damaged."
"The loss to the property was stated to be in lakhs of rupees but exact loss is being estimated and government machinery is on job, they added. The flash floods and cloud burst submerged the fields spread over acres of land.
On receipt of information about the accident, MLA Raipur-Domana Bharat Bhushan, District Development Commissioner (DDC) Jammu Ajit Sahu, Tehsildar Jammu, SDPO Domana Sanjay Parihar, SHO Kanachak Rakesh Sharma rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
While assessing the losses, DDC Jammu directed Naib Tehsildar to prepare a detailed report regarding the loss of property.
Meanwhile it was revealed that houses of Vijay Kumar, Dwarka Nath, Parshotam Lal Sharma, Kali Dass, Thoru Ram, Bodh Raj, Kewal Krishan, Sham Lal and many others were submersed in flood waters and received damages while two cattle of Vijay Kumar got killed due to flood.
Besides this, shops of Parshotam Kumar, Kali Dass, Thoru Ram and others received losses worth lakhs of rupees due to flooded water. Atta Chakki belonging to one Bodh Raj also received damages besides a Packaging factory located in the area.
Sarpanch Kangrail Panchayat K L Sharma, Naib Sarpanch Rajan Sharma, Panch Raj Kumar, Jitender Sharma, Village Numberdar Brahma Nand Sharma have demanded early restoration of link road and adequate compensation for the excessive losses to the villagers.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and former MLA Bali Bhagat and former Corporator Omi Khajuria also visited the village and gave a patient hearing to the grievances of the people. They assured to highlight the concern of the villagers at the right quarters.
