Vegetables, fruits price shoots up in flood-hit J&K | | | Jammu, Sept 13 : In view of prevailing flood situation across Jammu and Kashmir, vegetables and fruits price has gone up. Vendors in Jammu and other parts of the regions are minting money due to shortage of vegetables and fruits while inflation is rising. "Due to shortage of fruits and vegetables in the markets after flashfloods hit Jammu and Kashmir, especially the Kashmir Valley, the rates have doubled," a local said.He said for the past two days, fresh vegetables and fruits were not even available at 'mandis' (markets) and people were forced to purchase the stale items. "The areas in Jammu Region and Kashmir Valley, which produce vegetables and fruits, are the worst hit by flash floods, thus the non-availability of fresh items," a vendor said.He said they were forced to sell the items on higher rates and they were also purchasing them costlier from the wholesale markets. A housewife said the district administration should at least keep check on the rates of vegetables and fruits being charged by vendors from customers."There is no check at all. The administration must constitute teams for visiting vegetable and fruits vendors to enquire about the rates and those overcharging should be fined," she added. |
