Omar clueless about how to deal with crisis | People fear worst, essentials vanish | | Fazal Khan SRINAGAR, Sept 13: As the Kashmir remained cut-off for the ninth running day today due to ravaging floods that submerged south and central Kashmir smartly dressed Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah remained clueless about how to deal with the crisis. For the past few days he is appearing regularly on the TV channels and is expressing his helplessness to deal with the situation. "How can he (Omar) help us when he himself is so helpless," said a survivor. He said that in this hour of crisis Omar should have led from the front and should have approached all the states for help. "Someone needs to ask the Chief Minister during past nine days what has he done except giving TV interviews," the survivor added. State administration has collapsed and state government is invisible. Civilians, army and Indian Air Force men have been working hard for the past nine days to evacuate the people who are stranded across length and breadth of the Valley. The 300-km Srinagar-Jammu highway remaining closed has added to the woes of people as supplies have dried up and shopkeepers have no stocks. "Chief Minister should have ensured that ration and other essentials reach Kashmir from other states by air but he has done nothing in this regard. He (Omar) is just waiting and watching. He cannot just depend on IAF and Army he has to seek assistance from other states otherwise after floods we will die hungry," said Iqbal Lone of Rambagh. Chief Minister not making any attempt to reach out to people who are putting up in makeshift shelters on the roadsides has annoyed the masses. "Omar conducting aerial surveys only and not feeling the ground situation has shown how much concerned he is about the plight of people," Lone added. As the days are passing crisis are aggravating as government till date has failed to arrange any pumps to drain out the stagnant water from various parts of the Srinagar city. "Failure of the Chief Minister to mobilize his men and machinery has exposed his leadership skills. Leaders have to deliver at the times of crisis. Water levels in rivers have receded but no attempt is being made to shift the inundated water to various spill channels and rivers flowing across Kashmir," said Shabir Ahmed. Till water is not drained out from lanes and bye-lanes nothing would move. To drain out the water is the biggest challenge, other Herculean task which government would face in coming days would be to provide ration to people as chances of Srinagar-Jammu highway getting reopened for traffic seem bleak. "For first few days Omar kept on saying his cabinet ministers and other associates are missing. All the VIPs have been traced and his colleagues are safe and sound. Someone needs to ask the Chief Minister how he and his colleagues intend to solve the problems of people?" asked Fayaz Ahmed. He said holding closed door meetings won't serve any purpose if the crisis prevails for one more week people would be forced to migrate from Kashmir to other areas for survival. "It's going to be a tough battle for us and I don't think government and the chief minister have any clue about the problems being faced by the masses on ground," Ahmed added. He said people are facing acute shortage of drinking water as most of the filtration plants have become defunct. "No attempt is being made to restore the water supply. Allah only can help us," Ahmed said. |
