Where are our worthy Ministers? | CM's problem | | Rustam JAMMU, Sept 13: On Thursday, NC working president and Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, "For the first 24 to 36 hours that was my question (Where's the Government?). Can you remember a single natural disaster that took out the capital city? I had no Government. I started rebuilding efforts with six people in a room". He expressed his helplessness when told that "there was no sign of the Government in response to the massive humanitarian crisis". Actually, he told a private news channel that "My Government couldn't respond in the first 24 hours as we didn't have a Government". Omar Abdullah didn't speak the whole truth. The fact of the matter is that his government is still non-existent. It is the Central Government and its disaster response force and army, air force, navy, BSF and the CRPF which have been working round-the-clock since Sunday, when the situation went out of control for reasons not really difficult to understand. One of the reasons, of course, was the utter failure of the Omar Abdullah-led NC-Congress coalition government to warn the people on time so that they could shift to some safer places. Accepted for the argument sake that there was no government in the state for the first 24 to 36 hours or say till Monday, but what did the government do after Monday. It was non-existent before Monday and it remained non-existent after Monday leaving the crying people in the lurch. Yes, Omar Abdullah did appear on a few news channels to express solidarity with the people, as also to tell them that they were responsible for distress, and commit all possible help to the marooned civilians and that's all. In practical terms, his government remained out of the scene during all these days of worst kind of tragedy. It's, however, true that this time Omar Abdullah appeared soft towards the Central government and the Army and was critical of those who tried to disrupt the rescue and relief operations. Obviously, he hinted at separatists, who allegedly instigated attacks on the security forces. Omar Abdullah claims that his government is in place since Monday, but he has not spoken a word about his out-of-the-scene ministers from Kashmir. Till afternoon today, nobody saw Finance Minister AR Rather, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ali Mohd Sagar, Health Minister Taj Mohi Ud Din, Forest Minister Mian Altaf, CAPD Minister Ch Mohd Ramzan, School Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, Tourism Minister G A Mir, Speaker of the State Assembly Mubarak Gul and Education Minister Akbar Lone. Nobody knows if they were safe or they were also in distress. It's only the ministers from Jammu who are seen and who are visiting the flood-hit areas of Jammu province to assess the situation and asses the nature and magnitude of damage. If Omar Abdullah says that he is full command and that his government has started functioning and helping out the marooned civilians, then he also needs to present his ministers from Kashmir to the people. He has to explain as to why none of his ministerial colleague from Kashmir came on the scene to help out the people and supervise relief and rescue operations, notwithstanding the fact that Rather, Sagar, Ramzan and Peerzada today suddenly appeared in Delhi and they, along with three other ministers, held meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. |
