Jammu region needs Rs 500 crore; PDD, PHE, PWD suffer major losses
Flash-floods temporary loss assessment

JAMMU, Sept 13: Jammu region needs more than Rs. 500 crore for restoration works across the 10 districts where flash-floods and landslides wreaked havoc during the recent heavy rains.
Jammu District is the worst hit in terms of damage to the infrastructure of various government departments. Though the departments are yet to submit detailed statement of losses to the government but sources in the Divisional Commissioner's office said that the losses so far communicated by some of the departments are more than Rs. 100 crore and would go up as all the departments come up with details.
He said that PDD and Flood Control departments have suffered heavy losses alongwith PWD and PHE departments. The departments are still assessing the losses and would come up with reports in the next few days. Same is the case with Kathua district where losses are still being assessed and would be communicated to the state government once the assessment is complete.
Of the losses which have been communicated to the government, Rajouri district with loss of Rs.8323.07 lakh is the worst hit. Early Times has already given detailed account of these losses in Rajouri district. The second district which has suffered immensely is Reasi which has sought an amount of Rs. 7945.81 lakh for restoration work. Roads and Buildings Department has demanded Rs. 3697.10 lakh for restoring the roads which got damaged due to flash floods.
The second badly hit department is Rural Development Department (RDD) which has suffered losses to the tune of Rs. 1248 lakhs. PHE department has lost schemes worth Rs.842.41 lakh. Poonch has sought Rs.3473 lakhs for restoration of Roads, water supply schemes, power supply and construction of flood protection walls. PWD and Flood Control department have been the worst.
Administration has sought Rs.1225 Lakh for addressing demands of PWD department and Rs.1166 lakhs for Flood Control Department. Udhampur district has sought Rs. 2453.36 lakhs for redressing the issues which have cropped up in PWD, PHE, PDD, Education and Rural Development Department due to the recent flash-floods and landslides. The district has claimed that PWD has suffered highest losses alongwith PMGSY and Education Departments.
Kishtwar district has reported losses to the tune of Rs.1909.65 lakhs with PWD being worst hit with requirement of Rs.854.64 lakhs and Rural Development Department (RDD) needing Rs. 790 lakhs for reconstruction and restoration. Irrigation, PDD and PHE too have suffered huge losses in Kishtwar. The administration in Kishtwar has sought immediate release of funds for restoration work.
Ramban has demanded Rs.1442.24 lakhs for restoration work. This includes Rs.958.90 lakhs for PWD, Rs.176.34 for Power Development Department (PDD) and Rs.137 lakhs for PHE. Doda has suffered lowest amount of losses and hence, has sought just Rs.606.12 lakhs for addressing needs and demands of various departments which have suffered in the district.
Samba district has sought an amount of Rs.504.72 lakh for restoration of water supply, power and roads. Divisional Commissioner Shantmanu when asked said, "This is tentative figure and meant for coverage under SDRF. We have to complete temporary restoration works within 60 days. So, whatever amount has been project is meant for temporary restoration." He added that departments have been asked to speed up temporary restoration work and project demand for permanent restoration.
Our focus is to see difficulties of commoners are eased, said Shantmanu while adding that Jammu region has seen worst floods of the history and hence, steps have been taken on war-footing basis to bring life back on rails across the region.
