Govt's 'listen to your conscience' rhetoric draws flak
'Our bosses unaware about ground realities'

SRINAGAR, Sept 15: A day after government asked its employees in Kashmir to listen to their conscience and join duties the marooned employees today reacted sharply saying, "Our bosses are unaware about the ground situation as they are staying in five star hotels."
Talking to Early Times Shahid Ahmed of Jawahar Nagar said, "We have lost everything. We are wearing borrowed clothes and are surviving on relief donated by the people. How can we join the duties?"
A group of second rung employees alleged that top officials of the state government are staying at Grand Palace and are "enjoying life". "They are unaware about the tragedy that has hit the common people. Had our bosses been efficient and good planners they would have sought the help from the Centre. We need someone who can help us out at this stage as all of us are victims," they added.
Even 10-days after floods hit the Srinagar city many areas are still submerged. In the areas where water level has receded there is muck and mud all around. "It will take us days to clean our houses which are filled with filth," said Farooq Ahmed working in Cooperative department.
State government is caught between devil and the deep sea as it needs manpower to handle the crisis, while as on other hand employees are finding it hard to come at terms with life as they are busy setting their own houses in order.
One of the employees suggested that top officials should seek help from the Centre till normalcy returns. "Can't the government hire some private firms from other states to help people? There are hundreds of firms operating in other states who provide manpower. They can prove to be of great help as they can install pumps and lift the damaged electric wires," the employee added.
He said at this point of time we have to ensure that our homes and families are safe. "Till we don't make them safe we cannot move as there is no help coming from anywhere," he added.
Non-local labourers leaving the Valley has aggravated the manpower crisis in Kashmir. Thousands of non-locals have left the Valley during past 10-days. People are not finding any labourers to help them.
Sources told Early Times that top officials of Omar Abdullah led government are busy framing a contingency plan to deal with the situation as chances of employees resuming their duties in coming few days look bleak. "We are planning to outsource the dewatering operations from the inundated areas of the city. We are making a proposal and it would be finalized soon," a top official said.
He said that there are many areas in the city which are without electricity and drinking water. "We have to restore essential services at war footing basis as relief coming from Centre is decreasing with each passing day," he added.
Most hospitals, including Lal Ded, G B Pant and SMHS, turning defunct is making patients suffer and shortage of staff is hampering restoration work. "We need outside help and rulers need to realize it. It's astounding that they are not making any move. Forcing employees to rejoin their duties is not going to help anyone's cause," said Sajad Hussain.
