Cross-border shelling hit schooling hard in border belts of Kathua | 140 Govt schools affected, 61 running classes in relief camps, 79 still closed | | Sanjay Pathak
KATHUA, Oct 10: Cross-border shelling and firing has hit hard to normal class work in hundreds of government and private schools in border belts of Kathua district as the district administration is forced to either close down educational institutions or start class work in relief camps. Sources said the district administration has closed about 140 government schools in Hiranagar and Marheen educational zones since the start of shelling and firing on international border in Hiranagar sector on October 7. "Out of 140 government schools, 61 schools have been set up in relief camps while 79 educational institutions are still closed. The administration has decided to declare holiday in all schools, government and private, in Hiranagar and Marheen educational zones for next two days, i.e till October 12," sources said. Sources said teachers and students in educational institutions in border areas of Kathua district were under distress and living in fear psychosis following heavy shelling from other side of the border. "Teachers and students continue to live in constant fear of being hit by crossfire. The border residents have already deserted their homes and have taken shelter in government buildings and schools. Children are not able to continue their studies in such hostile conditions," sources said. Ratno Devi, a victim of crossfire putting up at relief camp in Hiranagar said, "The people had to run for safety after the Pakistan forces shelled our village. Our children are under a constant fear and their future is in dark as they are not able to continue their studies. There should be permanent solution to this border firing so that the people don't suffer". As per the reports of the district administration, as many as 1,998 families have been shifted from 57 border villages in Kathua district so far. "There are 9,597 persons in 35 different camps established across Hiranagar and Marheen tehsils. Due to border shelling, 57 villages have been affected out of which 41 villages are directly affected directly. Administration has earmarked 61 buildings as relief camps in various areas," the reports said. Since last evening, 12 more villages have been evacuated within 0-3 Km range from border and 16 more camps established. A government school teacher, who declined to be identified, said the neighbouring country had been pounding the civilian areas including residential complexes and schools. "In the present scenario, how could we run classes in shelling prone areas? There has been a great fear among the teachers and students. Studies have severely been affected due to cross border firing," she said. |
