Vested interests 'hijack' relief operations | Good work done by philanthropists goes unnoticed | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 10: Soon after the floods inundated Kashmir philanthropists from different parts of the country rushed truckloads of relief towards the Valley. However, there was a twist in the tale as the people in Kashmir who were at the forefront missed no opportunity to take credit for the relief distribution which was being sent by others. Sources told Early Times that a few influential people had deployed their men near Lakhanpur-border of Jammu and Kashmir---and on the pretext of helping the volunteers took credit for relief distribution. Thus, denying the credit to the real philanthropists who had put in all the efforts to reach out to the flood hit people of the Valley, which witnessed worst floods of the century. A few people ensured that relief which was coming from anonymous sources gets a name and they get credit for organizing the entire show. They ensured that their activities get enough publicity in the local media so that they can later claim that they were instrumental in carrying out relief and rehabilitation work when entire official machinery was missing. Recently Air India announced that it won't ferry any relief material free of cost to Kashmir. "The decision was taken following the inputs that a few people under the garb of relief distribution were trying to derive mileage out of the catastrophe," said a source. He said initially the generic medicine which was sent by the various pharmaceutical companies was distributed free among the flood victims. However, along with the passage of time free medical camps vanished and the medicines which were being sent free were "dumped by a few people so that these can be later sold in the open market." Many NGOs too have been active in Kashmir during the past one month and they are claiming that they have reached out to victims and have done whatever they could to help them. "A few NGOs have received huge amounts as donations from different organizations from across the country but there is no one who can ask them what they have done with the money and what is the exact amount they have collected," the source said. Pertinently, people in most flood hit areas have been claiming that they haven't received any monetary assistance from any quarter. The relief has remained confined to water bottles, rice, sugar, dals, blankets and a few other items but no cash assistance has been provided to the victims. An analyst while talking To Early Times said, "It's unfortunate that a few people with vested interests are trying to build their castles on the devastated homes of the flood victims. Vested interests have joined the credit race so that they can boost about their achievements later." He said on the contrary at many places across the Valley relief was distributed among the affected people without any publicity. "People whom floods had spared extended the helping hand towards victims without expecting anything in return. The good work carried by locals and the philanthropists from other states went unnoticed as they never tried to indulge in cheap publicity," the analyst added. |
