Early Times Report

Anantnag, Dec 17: Notwithstanding a ban , massive illegal constructions are coming up on agricultural land in this southern district along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, courtesy nexus between Revenue authorities and Land Mafia.
Influential violators in nexus with the Revenue authorities are constructing commercial structures on agriculture land in Anantnag.
Reports said despite the government imposing a ban on such constructions, they were going on in full swing with the patronage of Revenue officials. They said that rich and affluent people with the help of authorities are constructing commercial structures on both sides of National highway from Bijbehara to Anantnag.
"Along with those whose constructions were stopped by former Deputy Commissioner Kifayat Hussian Rizvi, affluent violators are constructing shopping complexes, auto mobile service stations etc with the help of Revenue authorities." Mohd Yousf, a Batengoo resident told Early Times.
He said that authorities have turned a blind eye towards these illegal constructions which are going on at almost all the agricultural land along the national highway. Another resident, Irshad Ahmad said that maximum violators enjoy political patronage. "The people with political clout continued to vandalize the agricultural land and department seems toothless," he added.
Batengoo residents said that stretch from Bijbehara to Batengoo used to be a lush green patch but now due to massive constructions authorities have transformed it into a concrete jungle.
Locals accused authorities of benefiting 'Land Mafia' which according to them is ensuring hassle free constructions on agriculture land. "Ban is for poor not for affluent. We know how land mafia people are getting permissions for constructions from the competent authorities," they said.
"I equally doubt the role of media in controlling the damage which is being done to our environment, why you people are not raising this issue with the authorities. Till yesterday you were busy with elections during which these constructions took place."Mohd Amin, a Bijbehara resident opined.
Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Syed Tasaduq Geelani, when contacted assured action. "Since you brought it into my notice I will direct the respective Tehsildars to stop the constructions and implement the ban." He said.
