SRINAGAR, Jan 22: Residents of village Nowgam in North Kashmir's Bandipora district today held massive protest demonstrations against the administration for allegedly closing its eyes towards the sufferings of the flood hit families.
Shouting loud slogans against district administration for allegedly putting the lives of thousands of people at risk, residents of Nowgam, Gundi Nowgam, Payeen Nowgam and Zalpora villages in Bandipora district this afternoon staged demonstrations at Lal Chowk here accusing the authorities of giving free hand to blue-eyed contractors to use sub-standard material for the reconstruction of the breached bunds.
The protesters demanded immediate restoration of bunds and nallahs that suffered devastation due to the recent floods in the district. They appealed the Governor N.N Vohra to personally look into the issue and conduct a thorough probe by credible investigating agency.
"It is quite unfortunate on part of authorities that the material used for the restoration of breached bunds is sub-standard while as the people sitting at the helm of affairs are watching the fraudulence of contractor as mute spectators," Ghulam Mustafa a protester told reporters.
He claimed that the contractor at the back of some officials of Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FC) has used inferior material for the reconstruction of bund along Ferozpur nallah at Gundi-Duji Nowgam.
"Despite repeated requests to the higher-ups of district administration to look into the fraudulence no actions were taken against the contractor. We have already lost our dwellings in devastating floods last year although we do not want to be the victims of contractor's misdemeanor," said Ghulam.
The protesters threatened serious agitation in case the contractor who has been assigned bund restoration was not immediately replaced.
"He started the restoration work some two months back. To earn extra money he excavated earth from one side of the deluge hit bund and used the same on other side resulting extra damage to it. We have witnessed many major and minor floods but the ferocity of recent floods was extremely high. We are sure that a minor inundation will lead to destruction of entire village if the restoration work was not handed over to some other contractor," said the protestors.
The protesters said that the contractor hollow out those areas of the bund which had already developed deep ruts due to past floods.
"He has not only made the bund vulnerable for risks but also opened the main gate of the flood spill which might prove dangerous in future. We had time and again apprised the authorities about our reservations, however our concerns always fell flat on deaf ears," said Javaid Ahmad Wagay another protester.
