| As Obama comes to union capital for attending R-Day function, security gets beefed up across Kashmir | | Police, security agencies all alert to avoid any untoward incident | | Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, Jan 22: Close on the heels of visit of President, United States of America, Barrack Obama and Republic Day, security has been beefed up across Kashmir valley in order to thwart any militant attack coinciding with these events.
Reports said that police and security forces have erected barricades in various areas of the city so as to ensure that situation is normal in the summer capital. Random checking of the public vehicles is being carried out in the different areas of the city and frisking of the civilians has also been going on over the past few days.
Barricades have been set up on Maulana Azad Road, Residency Road, Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Jehangir Chowk, Barzulla, Sanat Nagar, Hyderpora, Eidgah, Munawarabad, Pantha Chowk, Dalgate, Nehru Park, Parimpora, Qamarwari and Shalteng areas of the summer capital. Reports about erection of barricades have also come in from the district headquarters and towns in Central, South and North Kashmir. Vehicles entering and leaving the summer capital of the state are also being checked thoroughly by police and security forces personnel in order to ensure that nothing untoward happens. At some places passengers of the public vehicles are asked to come down and go through the cumbersome procedure of frisking and body checking. Over the past few days security has been beefed up across Kashmir after inputs that militants may target areas where members of minority communities are living. Police and security agencies have also been maintaining that there are chances that militants may cause disturbance in the Republic Day functions.
Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel are keeping a strict vigil on the movement of people and vehicles in the summer capital along with the other district headquarters of the valley. Extra security bandobast has been put in place around the Bakshi stadium area where the main function of republic day in Srinagar would be held.
The police and CRPF personnel are also maintaining a tight vigil in the areas of downtown Srinagar where there are chances that protest demonstrations can break out any time. The agencies are taking precautions in order to ensure that people don’t come out and lodge protests on eve of Obama’s visit and republic day functions as well.
Director General of Jammu & Kashmir Police, Kondavati Rajendra has already issued directions to the officers and jawans that stringent security measures are put in place on eve of Obama’s visit and republic day as well. Similar instructions have been issued by officers of army and other security agencies to their personnel so that no untoward incident takes place. Tight vigil is being maintained along the Line of Control and International Border since there are chances that Pakistan may try resort to firing and shelling on the eve of Obama’s visit and republic day. The President of USA would be chief guest during this year’s republic day function in New Delhi. He will witness the parade on Rajpath and be part of the republic day celebrations in the union capital. |
