Minor injured while fiddling with abandoned grenade

Rajouri, Jan 22: A minor (13) has lost his left hand and received severe splinter injuries when an abandoned grenade blasted in his hand while fiddling with it in the evening today. Meanwhile a live grenade was found during digging of the field in Darhal and a rusted grenade launcher from near Jawahar Lal Navodya Vidhalaya in Kandi area in the district today.
Sources said that one 13 years old Mohd Zafeer s/o Mohd Saleem had gone to his relative house reportedly his grandfather identified as Mohd Tuffail s/o Alam Din at village Namblan under the jurisdiction of Police Station Rajouri.
"I found a round (ball type) object inside the cattle shed and when was inspecting it and it suddenly exploded in which I was injured," the injured minor said while giving statement to police.
On hearing explosion the locals and relatives rushed to his help and immediately rushed to District Hospital and meanwhile police also rushed to the spot to investigate the matter.
According to hospital authorities the left hand of the boy was badly damaged and doctors are trying to save his life.
Reliable sources said that village Namblan falls on the track which was once a safest and shortest route for the intruders coming from across the border from Kotli and other areas. They added that many locals of the area once were the active Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of the different militant outfits and were providing logistic, financial and moral help to the infiltrators. Sources added that Mohd Tuffail allegedly was once a OGW and the grenade could be among some weapons/ explosives dumped by the militants in a safe hide out inside the cattle shed. Meantime in-charge Police Post Chingus rushed to the village to verify the facts and launched a massive search of the house and adjoining area.
Dr Haseeb Mughal, SSP Rajouri that the boy gone to cattle shed to put feed for the cattle where he found the grenade and took it in curiosity. "While he was fiddling with it and it suddenly exploded resulting into critical injuries to him, SSP Rajouri added. SSP Rajouri Dr Mughal said, "Whether Tuffail is involved or not this would only be possible after detailed investigations in this regard." SSP Rajouri also informed that during digging of the field by a JCB, a live grenade/bomb has been recovered in Darhal area in the evening and a bomb disposal team has been rushed to the spot.Meanwhile 60 RR also has recovered a rusted grenade launcher from near Jawahar Lal Navodya Vidhalaya in Kandi in the district today which was also destroyed on the spot, he said, adding that Police have started investigations in all the three incidents.
