'Sonia destroying Congress in J&K by promoting Azad'
Rajya Sabha polls

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Jan 30: The agreement reached between the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, and working president of the National Conference, Omar Abdullah, on the impending Rajya Sabha polls for four seats "has not gone down well with the JKPCC chief and his supporters and many others in the Congress party". "Sonia Gandhi is further destroying the Congress party in Jammu & Kashmir by promoting outgoing Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is squarely responsible for the Congress' defeat in the Lok Sabha elections as well as the Assembly elections," told a very senior party functionary on the condition of anonymity, adding that
"by again fielding the failed Azad, Sonia and her coterie are ensuring the demise of the Congress party in the state".
According to the agreement reached between Sonia Gandhi and Omar Abdullah, the NC is contesting two seats against Notification No. 1 and 2, which they would surely lose with a huge margin, while the Congress candidate Ghulam Nabi Azad is contesting against Notification No. 3 on which election will be held for two seats. The other two candidates belong to the PDP and the BJP, which are contesting the elections jointly. As per credible sources within the Congress, the agreement says that all the NC MLAs will vote for Azad and all the Congress MLAs will support the NC candidates for the upcoming Legislative Council elections. In other words, the Congress will not field any candidate for the upcoming Legislative Council elections and, contrarily, it will work for the victory of the NC candidates. Seven seats are falling vacant in the Legislative Council on March 8, 2015.
"Why should the Congress MLAs vote for Azad, when the deal between Sonia Gandhi and Omar Abdullah is against the Congress party itself," the very senior Congress leader told the Early Times. "The Congress high command has been working against the Congress party since February 1975, when Indira Gandhi brought down her own party's government in the state and brought back to power Plebiscite Front leader and former NC president Sheikh Abdullah whom her own father had dethroned in August 1953 on the ground that the Sheikh had been flirting with the United States of America in order to get the state separated from India and establish 'Switzerland-type independent Kashmir'.
The need of the time was to show the NC its rightful place because it systematically worked against the interests of the Congress, but Sonia Gandhi followed in the footsteps of Indira Gandhi overlooking the long-term interests of the Congress in the sensitive border state," he further said, adding "the high command will have to pay a very heavy price for seeking the support of the NC for Azad who has always promoted his own selfish interests". "I am not the only pledged Congressman who is not happy with the agreement; there are many in the Congress who are opposing the agreement in their own way," he also said, and claimed that "he is only symbolizing the growing discontent in the JKPCC".
