Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 18: The Department of Environmental Sciences, Central University of Jammu, organised "Tree Talk"- the first ever function in the wilderness of its upcoming Campus at Bagla (District Samba). Dr. O.P. Sharma Vidhyarathi IFS, Chief Conservator Forests, was the Chief Guest of the function and Prof. Devanand, VC presided over the function. Dr. Sharma highlighted the importance of trees and told how these were useful in several ways for the survival of mankind. Speaking on the occasion, he revealed that Tree Talk was the nick name for Natural Heritage interpretation, which was launched by United Nations in December, 2010, the year which was declared as the World Biodiversity Year. Prof. Devanand, Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Jammu, said that trees were life giving and life sustaining entity on our planet, Earth. He highlighted the importance of trees as they produced oxygen, which is required for respiration of all living organisms and consume carbon dioxide, which is a toxic gas. He appealed to all present to protect and conserve our biodiversity for posterity. Prof. H.S. Sehgal, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, CUJ formally welcomed the Chief Guest and the audience and explained the role of trees in keeping environmental and ecological balance, adding that trees have inspired and attracted scientists, social workers, farmers, industrialists, poets, saints, indeed the people from all walks of life The function was attended by Prof. MK. Jyoti, Former Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, CUJ, Gurdip Singh, Chief of NGO, Savera, Dr. C.M. Seth, Chief World Wildlife Fund (J&K), Jit Singh, Registrar; Sh. H.K. Prasher, OSD (Finance); Dr. P.S. Pathania, Senior Consultant; Prof. Deepak Raj Gupta, Academic Administrator; other administrative staff and students of the Environmental Sciences. Prof. N.R. Sharma, Dean Students Welfare, CUJ, extended formal vote of thanks and Dr. Shweta Yadav, Assistant Professor, Deptt. of EVS, CUJ, conducted the stage. Later, a poster on Ghrana Wetland, prepared by Dr. C.M. Seth was released on this occasion. This was followed by a walk around the campus terrains covered by green vegetation where Dr. Sharma explained characteristics of trees to the students of Environmental Sciences. Some fruit trees were planted by the Chief Guest, VC, dignitaries and officers of the University. |
