2/18/2015 11:04:37 PM
Saahil Suhail

Anantnag, Feb 18: With the authorities in no mood to stop illegal fishing in Lidder, the precious Trout fish is in danger. According to locals, the fish are being caught illegally in the river at several locations particularly in Serchin, Batakoot and Movera area and some persons in nexus with the employees are allegedly using hazardous chemicals and electric current to kill the fish. "Since the past few weeks illegal fishing continues unabated in the area and a group of people with the support of employees are killing the precious 'Trout fish by using calcium carbonate and sometimes electric current," Sajjad Ahmad, a Movera resident told Early Times.
He said, "Today in front of Fisheries hut a group of people mostly the well know smugglers were fishing but ironically employees on duty didn't stopped them." Locals said that due to inactiveness of the employees of the concerned department river Lidder has become a fish poachers' paradise. They accused employees of having nexus with the fish poachers.
"Not only from Anantnag but people from Srinagar visit Batkoot and purchase trout fish from a couple of shopkeepers openly. If the employees are not involved how come these shopkeepers are fishing and later selling openly," locals said.
They said that the concerned department has failed to crackdown on the people involved in illegal fishing. Locals said that the use of chemicals for killing fish was causing extensive damage to the ecology and water bodies.
Environmentalists accused the department of committing negligence in preserving the ecology of Pahalgam. An official of the department admitted that the illegal fishing in Lidder has increased alarmingly.
"It is fact that illegal fishing has increased and the department is mulling to take strict action against the involved," he said.
Assistant Director Fisheries Anantnag, Muhammad Sadiq avoided repeated calls from Early Times.
