Early Times Report

Kathua, Feb 18: Hundreds of Kanals of Irrigation land, from Lakhanpur to Kalibari, has been grabbed by land mafia under the nose of officers of Irrigation department who acted like mute spectators and did nothing.
D 3, Main Canal, Old BP Canal and many other such canals have been completely grabbed by Government Primary School Shiva Nagar, Temples, Government Garages and its Workshop, District Employment & Counseling Centre, PHE department, Social Forestry Deptt, and private individuals but no action has been taken by Irrigation department against the grabbers.
Irrigation & Flood Control department Jammu under the supervision of Irrigation Division Kathua put up a hoarding near Old BP Canal clearly indicating that the land falling 55 ft left and 55 ft right from the center of the Old BP Canal belonged to the Irrigation department and those encroaching the irrigation land shall be prosecuted under the provision of J&K Water resource & Management Act 2010. But astoundingly, entire irrigation land has been grabbed by encroachers. Ironically, JK Social Forestry Department set up another hoarding near Dream Park Land on the bank of same canal that is just few feet of the hoarding of F & FC department. The hoarding depicts Forestry department has covered 7 hectare land duly demarcated by Wire Fencing and poles.
Being fully aware of the fact that land on either side of canal belonged to Irrigation department, People constructed big buildings, shops, private schools and temples on it without inviting any action.
When approached, DDC Kathua Dr.Shaheed Iqbal informed that a meeting has been convened to launch anti-encroachment drive in the District Kathua. He added that administration has issued instructions to all public departments to submit a list of encroached buildings, land and roads. "FIR will be filed if any department is found delinquent in submitting the list" the DDC added.
