Pakistan again provokes New Delhi
Towards trilateral talks on Jammu & Kashmir!
3/15/2015 11:44:49 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, Mar 15: Pakistan continues to provoke New Delhi by making irresponsible statements, repeatedly singing the same old irritating song that Jammu & Kashmir is not a settled issue and soliciting the support of international community for the resolution of the so-called Kashmir problem and according dangerous respectability to the Kashmir-based separatists and fanatics like Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Notwithstanding the fact that Islamabad longs for Kashmir's annexation to Pakistan using all conceivable means, it is seeking to tell the Kashmiri Muslims that it is for a solution that is also based on their aspirations.
It is doing so by constantly engaging with separatists like Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani and conveying an impression that Islamabad endorses the Kashmiri separatists view that Jammu & Kashmir is a trilateral issue between Delhi, Islamabad and Kashmiri Muslims.
On Saturday, the provocative Pakistan High Commission Abdul Basit invited Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to Delhi to apprise him about the outcome of the March 3 Foreign Secretary-level talks with India. It was none other than Mirwaiz himself who made this revelation while chairing the meeting of Awami Action Committee (AAC) at Mairwaiz Manzil, Srinagar. He told the members of the AAC that he had been invited by Abdul Basit to brief him about what transpired between the two Foreign Secretaries and hailed Pakistan for its "unflinching support to the Kashmir cause". He also told them that India will have to accept that "subjugation of Kashmiri people cannot continue forever". In fact, he told the AAC members that India is an alien country, which is maintaining its hold over Kashmir through Army and paramilitary forces.
Earlier on March 9, Abdul Basit met with Syed Ali Shah Geelani at the latter's residence in Delhi to "brief" him about the issues discussed between India and Pakistan during Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar's visit to Islamabad.
The two had also discussed "various other developments" in Jammu & Kashmir, where a political row had erupted following the release of separatist Masarat Alam on March 7, during the meeting that lasted for more than 30 minutes. Basit, in addition, invited him for the Pakistan Day onMarch 23. After his meeting with Basit, Geelani said that he told him that "Kashmir was the main issue and if it was to resolved, the other issues will also be resolved easily". In other words, Geelani had also taken the line Mirwaiz took on Saturday.
As said, on March 3 at Islamabad, Indian Foreign secretary S Jaishankar met his Pakistani counterpart Aizaz Ahmad Choudhary.
While the Indian Foreign secretary had reportedly focused on terrorism, Choudhary had raised the Kashmir issue. This attitude of Pakistan had "wrecked the Agra Summit on July 16, 2001" and the Indian leader who had disapproved of the Pakistani approach towards Kashmir was the then Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister L K advani.
Significantly, no dates for the resumption of the India-Pakistan talks could be fixed during the meeting between the two foreign secretaries on March 3. The fact that Islamabad is keeping Mirwaiz, Geelani and other Kashmiri separatists in loop is an attempt to tell the Kashmiri Muslims that it is with them and their anti-India aspirations. The worst part of the whole situation is that Pakistan is indulging in such provocative activities on the Indian soil itself, thus creating an environment that makes the people of India believe that trilateral talks between India, Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists over the political future of Jammu & Kashmir have started in a typical manner. New Delhi must dispel this impression by ensuing that no meeting takes place in Delhi or anywhere else in India between the Pakistani leaders and Kashmiri separatists. The sooner it is done, the better. Otherwise, things in the state could worsen.
