Pro-women’s rights activists drag feet on issue of Lal Singh disgracing lady doc

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 15: These so-called pro-people leaders, who would call a press conference on the issues of water scarcity, misuse of funds, discrimination with Jammu and many other such issues, are astonishingly silent over health minister Lal Singh allegedly disgracing a lady doctor in a function on March 9 last.

Harsh Dev Singh (ex-minister and JKNPP leader)
An advocate by profession, Harsh has always tried to remain in the forefront on any issue related to the welfare of the people, especially of Ramnagar assembly segment from where he lost the recent state elections. He would give many logics in support of his arguments but in the case of Lal Singh showing disgrace to Dr Gurmeet Kour, a registrar at psychiatrist hospital here, in a hospital function six days back, he has so far maintained a complete silence for the reasons best known to him only. He was expected to play a forefront role on the alleged issue of “insult” to a lady doctor in public by the minister but he failed to come true to the expectations of the civil society members in this regard.

Vikram Malhotra (Congress leader)
In politics, pro-people issues keep on coming across political activists and for the Jammu leaders, the alleged misbehaviour of Lal Singh with the lady doctor was one such issue. Vikram, who has been struggling to carve out a political space for himself in the state, too failed to lodge his protest against Lal Singh, who is known more for wrong reasons in political circles of the state. All his statements that he “stands for the integrity and safety of women” turned out to be hollow when he, like other Jammu leaders, was confronted with one such real issue.

Krishan Manhas (Veteran Shiv Sena leader)
This man carries a pro-Jammu, pro-people tag with him. He would jump into any issue related to the safety of women. During the nurses’ strike and mass agitation by the girl students of Jammu institutions over the mysterious missing of a Mubarak Mandi school student over a decade back, he remained in the forefront but over the issue of the health minister allegedly disrespecting the lady doctor, he has gone into “hibernation” to avoid making any comment. Such is the integrity of this veteran Shiv Sainik.

G I Singh (Hindustan Shiv Sena)
His claims of being a staunch supporter of the women’s rights lack sincerity. This is what one can presume from his silence over the health minister unreasonably “insulting” the lady doctor. Like the other so-called well-wishers of women, he too has not come forward in presenting his view on the episode.

Thakur Randeer Singh (Ex-minister and NCP chief)
A veteran politician, he would present himself as a reformer also. One fails to understand why the veterans like him have not raised their voice against the alleged incident of insult to the lady doctor in public by a man of the stature of a minister. Their silence speaks of their double standards. People are watching them and won’t spare them as and when they get their turn.

Girl students protesting against the Delhi gangrape (ET file photo)
A sea of girl students had emerged in the City of Temples in protest against the Delhi gangrape incident. Members of civil society, passersby, social organisations, NGOs and housewives were all part of their mass agitation. The issue was very sensitive and needed its condemnation in the strongest words. But the issue of the health minister “misbehaving” with the lady doctor is also not unimportant. It also needs the girl students’ condemnation so that in future no minister or any other top government servant dares to insult women.

Rama Kant Dubey (Ex-VHP leader)
He is another self-proclaimed women’s rights activist. He would hold at least 20 press conferences in a week over a variety of issues but has not bothered to say a few words on the health minister showing disrespect to the lady doctor. He had developed cold feet in an incident of a man “misbehaving” with a school girl, belonging to a very poor family of Sunjawan, near Chata on the city outskirts over a decade back. While he had visited the girl’s family and met this scribe there, he had not helped the family for “unknown” reasons. In the Lal Singh matter also, he has maintained silence.
