Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 28: The separatists and their supporters - apart from mainstream political parties like the defeated National Conference were in a state of shock till the US President Barrack Obama's Delhi visit on the occasion of the Indian Republic Day. The reason was the formation of the BJP-led NDA government in the centre with the BJP having 282 members in the Lok Sabha and the massive victory of the BJP in Jammu province in the assembly elections. They had felt that they had lost the game. But things changed dramatically after January 26 with the anti-national forces in the Valley getting opportunity after opportunity to intensify their campaign against India. What emboldened them all the more were four developments which unfolded in the second and third week of March and on and after March 23.
It was on March 14 that the Ministry of home affairs asked the Jammu and Kashmir Government to give its views on the interlocutors' report so that New Delhi could take a view on it. Two days later, a senior official in the same ministry reportedly asked former interlocutor and Director of Delhi Policy Group Radha Kumar to give her views on her 2006 report on Jammu and Kashmir. It was reported that Union Government wanted to take the so-called peace process forward and by the peace process it obviously meant its intention to accord legitimacy to the politics of separatism and communalism being indulged in by the Kashmiri leadership. The worst happened on March 23, when the Union Government humiliated India by asking Minister of State for external affairs and former Army Chief VK Singh to share platform with Kashmiri separatists in the Pakistan High Commission. The Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit practically snubbed and ridiculed India by justifying the presence seven Kashmiri separatists on the Pakistan Day celebrated in the Pakistan High Commission and the Kashmiri separatists using the opportunity to taunt India by saying that Jammu and Kashmir was not a part of India and "we are disputed people".
All these developments changed the whole scenario in the Valley and to the extent that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq would use a religious place to tell India that the Kashmiris were the only stakeholders and that their involvement was imperative in the dialogue process. "No solution to Kashmir issue was possible by sidelining the wishes and aspirations of Kashmiris. Hurriyat will shortly launch a massive campaign - 'Kashmir First and Kashmiri First' - with regard to the resolution of Kashmir issue," said Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while addressing a Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid in downtown Srinagar.
Just underline "Kashmir First and Kashmiri First" and it would not be difficult for anybody to understand its meaning. The Kashmir first and Kashmiri first statement only meant that the small Valley and the Muslims it houses are the only factors in the political situation in the state and the people of Jammu region and Ladakh and those who migrated from Kashmir in early 1990 to escape the extremists' wrath are no more than the ryots whose life is not one of social, economic and political aspirations and that they have no other alternative but to accept their perverted ideology and live with them and suffer persecution like the minorities in Pakistan and Bangladesh have been suffering since decades.
Indeed, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq crossed the red line by saying what he said was utterly unacceptable. It is surprising that none in the political class in Jammu and Ladakh took cognizance of what he said. Even the so-called BJP and JKNPP ignored what Mirwaiz said. This indifferent attitude of the people of Jammu region and Ladakh would not do. They have to assert like they asserted in 1952, 1953, 1975, 1977, 1984, 1998, 2008 and 2009-2010 and comprehensively defeated the separatists in Kashmir. They must realize that it was their ideology that reigned supreme in the state between 1947 and till January 2015 despite the fact that the political power was in the hands of the Kashmiri leadership. They must also note that they didn't vote in the assembly elections for their slavery, persecution and insult.
