JK gets zero for Clean India Mission | GoI didn't issue any funds to Omar led regime | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 6: Keeping in view the functioning of the previous government in Jammu and Kashmir, the Modi government refrained from giving any funds to the JK government to implement much hyped Sawch Bharat (clean India) Mission, which was flagged by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi . The Clean India Mission was launched by the NDA government in New Delhi on October 2, 2014, but no funds were released to implement it in JK. Sources said that soon after the scheme was launched in New Delhi Jammu and Kashmir government's housing and urban development department prepared a concept paper and submitted to centre. "JK demanded Rs 815 crores for conversion of insanitary places into the sanitary ones. The project also mentioned that construction of the sanitary latrines by the household who defecate in open and also the construction of community toilets for the females who do not have space for the construction of individual toilets within the premises." The project that was submitted by the JK government stated that besides the management of solid waste, cluster approach would be adopted where under solid waste management projects would be established for group of towns. Meanwhile, in a bid to impress Modi, Omar Abdullah the then chief minister of JK in October last year nominated his political opponent and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and Nobel Peace prize winner Kailash Satyarthi among nine people to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan'. Omar himself got into the cleaning act when he picked up a broom and joined the Srinagar Municipal Corporation team on their night cleaning operation in the flood-hit areas of Srinagar. Yet, these acts didn't do any magic and the state wasn't issued any funds under the clean India Mission. Sources, privy to this development said that till date no funds have been released by GOI. The mission period for the Clean India is five years and would come to an end on 2019. The GOI has sanctioned Rs 20 lakh per annum for 'Clean India' campaign to over 2, 47,000 village Panchayats in India. GOI had also said the money would be provided from a fund of Rs 1,96,000 crore announced by the government for Clean India Mission over a five-year period. While the Urban Development Ministry would allocate Rs 62,000 crore for cleaning towns across the country, the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation will spend Rs 1,34,000 crore for the programme. |
