Innovative measures being taken to improve quality of education: Naeem Akhtar
'Govt to rationalize pupil-teacher ratio, promote job-oriented courses'

SRINAGAR, May 6: Reiterating the commitment of the Government to streamline and perk up the State's education system, Minister for Education today stressed the need for fast-tracking the reforms in this crucial sector. Speaking at a meeting to review the performance of the education sector in Kashmir division, the Minister said that various innovative measures are being taken to improve the quality of teaching and schooling.
Besides, Minister of State for Education, Information and Culture Priya Sethi, Commissioner Secretary School Education, Director School Education Kashmir, Joint Director School Education Kashmir, CEOs of Kashmir division and other officers were also present at the meeting.
Akhtar said special focus is being laid on skill development and capacity building of the teachers to enable them offer quality education.
Referring to the rationalisation of the pupil-teacher ratio in schools, the Minister said equitable and rational distribution of teachers in terms of numbers, experience and qualification is vital to the achievement of quality education at the basic level.
Urging the officers to redouble their efforts to improve the standard of education, Akhtar stressed the need for coordinated approach to achieve the ambitious goal and directed for optimum use of resources by rationalizing the staff strength as per the actual requirement.
With regard to capacity building of teachers, the Minister said that the teachers need to stay updated with newer and innovative teaching methods and directed for their regular training and refresher courses in different institutions. Training is a very important component and it must be held on regular basis, the Minister added.
It was decided at the meeting that the teachers shall be sent in batches to the BEd Colleges for undergoing special courses in teaching of mathematics for development of teaching expertise in the said subject.
Threadbare discussions on the education profile of various districts of Kashmir was held in the meeting and it was decided that services of extra staff in certain schools would be utilised to provide "after school guidance "to students who are slow learners, disadvantaged etc. especially in subjects like Mathematics, Science and English.
Asserting the need to develop academic atmosphere in schools across the State, the Minister directed that debating competitions should be held on various relevant topics at Zonal, District, Inter- District and State level besides Parents Day should also be organised and Sports activities encouraged.
Minister called upon the education officers to introduce such new subjects in the schools that add value to the skill development of the students and are driven by market demand so that the students could pursue career-oriented vocational subjects besides traditional focus on academic education.
He asked the CEOs to personally carry out administrative inspections of all zones adding that they should take up at least 10 schools every month for detailed inspection and academic audit.
