Srinagar, May 27: Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers got stranded as the national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the Kashmir valley, has again been closed due to fresh landslides today. Traffic on the highway was resumed this morning after remaining suspended yesterday due to landslides, triggered by rain and fresh snowfall. A traffic police official told said that traffic on the Srinagar-Leh national highway was again suspended due to fresh landslides at India Gate. ''We resumed traffic this morning after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the highway, put into service sophisticated machines and men and cleared the landslides.
The BRO is working to clear the landslides,'' he said, adding that it will take some hours to put through the traffic again.
He said the highway is open for both ways. However, only one-way traffic is allowed at Zojila pass where the road is still very narrow at some places due to huge walls of snow on both sides.Traffic was suspended yesterday morning after rain and fresh snowfall triggered landslides at some places.
''We allowed traffic from Drass to Sonamarg this morning and vehicles will ply from Sonmarg to Drass in the afternoon, he said. However, hundreds of vehicles on both sides of the Zojila were stopped, official sources said, adding that they will be allowed to move towards their respective destination once a green signal is received from the BRO and traffic police officials posted at different places. The Centre has already agreed to construct a tunnel at Zojila to make it an all weather road to Ladakh which remained cut off during winter months due to ten to 15 feets of snow.
