Confusion, ambivalence, opportunism
BJP and Article 370
5/28/2015 12:26:16 AM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 27: The BJP has, it is manifestly clear, lost its way. It has no clear stand on any of the issues which it held very dear not-so-long-ago. It has over the days gone totally confused and ambivalent and turned so opportunistic that it changes its stand in no time in a most brazen and shameless manner ignoring the damage it is causing to itself, the people and the country.
That the BJP has gone confused and ambivalent could be seen from the statements the BJP leaders made on Article 370 in three days (May 24-May 26). On May 24, BJP national spokesperson, Sambit Patra, told media persons in Jammu that the Article 370 was a "core issue" for the party and it would "work for" its abolition once it won "two-majority or got the required numbers". Within 24 hours, another BJP national spokesperson and former Congress supporter MJ Akbar contradicted him and declared in Delhi at the party headquarters that "status quo" would be maintained on Article 370. So much so that he declared that the issue of Article 370 could not be taken up by the Parliament as it was a constitutional issue. He expressed these views on May 25.
And on May 26, BJP national president Amit Shah, who is now known more for his jumla comment that has become a permanent embarrassment for his party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi than for anything else contradicted MJ Akbar. Addressing press conference at party headquarters in Delhi to highlight the so-called achievements of the Modi Government during its first year, the angry and clueless BJP national president said that the BJP needed 370 MPs to address the party's core issues - Article 370, Ram Temple and Uniform Civil Code. He, in fact, snubbed media persons by asking them to first read the Constitution and then ask him questions pertaining to the core issues. He was so arrogant.
Earlier on December 1, 2013, the then BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi had in Jammu advocated the need for a debate on Article 370 to find if this (atrocious and divisive) Article had benefited or harmed the state and its people and that it would be retained if it was established that it had benefited the state and its people. He had also condemned Nehru and held Article 370 responsible for all the ills facing the state.
Mercifully, the BJP under his pressure or whatever dropped Article 370 from its core agenda during the Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir. Paradoxically, the BJP did a shameful U-turn after Hina Bhat, who had just joined the BJP in Srinagar, threatened that she, like other Kashmiri Muslims, would pick up gun in case Article 370 was amended, or abrogated or even made part of the party's election manifesto. The BJP, it needs to be underlined, had got printed its election manifesto for its release, but decided not to release it after the Hina Bhat's diktat. The BJP manifesto did contain a reference to Article 370 and it was on the lines Narendra Modi had suggested on December 1.
All this should expose the BJP and its duplicity. It was no wonder that almost all the news channels on May 26 blasted the BJP and ridiculed it. The BJP, it appears, is in a self-destruct mode.
