Early Times Report
Jammu, June 19: It is a wakeup call for the government. The number of children enrolled in government schools of Samba district is dropping every year and most of the schools are on the verge of closure.
Out of 513 schools, 139 schools located in five zones have less than 10 children on rolls, sources told Early Times.
The roll breakup of the 139 schools goes like this:
Three schools have one children each; five have two children each; three schools have three children each; 15 schools have four students each; 13 schools five students each; 17 schools six students each; 20 with seven students each; 19 with eight students each; 15 with nine students each; and 23 schools have 10 students each.
Moreover, six schools were shut down last year after they witnessed zero enrolment.
Sources said Gagwal zone with 25 schools topped the list of five zones that witnessed major decline in student enrolment.
It is followed by Ramgarh with 21 schools and Samba with around 16 schools having less than 10 enrolments.
"Despite having well qualified teachers and also increase in allocations, the government had to shut down a large number of schools across the state few years ago after sharp drop in student enrollment. But there is still no policy in place to improve the education in such schools," sources said.
For a primary school to function smoothly, it should have a minimum of 25 students on roll. At the moment, 139 government schools of Samba have less than or equal to 10 students.
Sources attributed poor results in the matriculation exams among the primary resons for the steep decline in enrolment in government schools.
Recently, the Board of School Education declared Class 10 and 12 results in which government schools witnessed around 50% pass percentage. Director School Education Jammu, Yasha Mudgal could not be contacted for comment despite repeated efforts.
