6/19/2015 11:28:53 PM
Early Times Report

Samba, June 19: The prohibitory orders issued by the DistrictMagistrate, banning the cremation of dead bodies in Devika beneath the holy Shiv Temple in Purmandal stands violated by the people who continue to cremate the dead bodies at Devika instead of the cremation ground constructed by the Housing Board which is about half a kilometer away from the area.
In this regard the District Magistrate,Samba Sheetal Nanda has nowwritten a letter to SSP Samba urging him to take immediate steps in implementing orders issued by the authorities regarding banning the cremation of dead at Devika beneath the holy Shiv Temple where thousands of devotees use to come to pay their obeisance.
The DC in her letter has urged the SSP Samba that the ban orders be implanted in letter and spirit so that no dead body is cremated in Devika beneath the Shiv Temple and the public nuisance is removedpermanently and the long standing grievances of the people of the area are removed once for all.
The letter said the ban enforced by the government on cremation of dead was enforced for some time but currently it stands violated.
The DC in her letter also made it clear that existence of the Shamshan Ghat on the Devika beneath the Shiva temple is not only un-aesthetic but also environmentally harmful.
The letter further said that the dead bodies are being cremated on the bed of the river Devika causing grave inconvenience to the public at large. The smoke emitted from funeral pyres is causing air pollution and adversely affecting the public health especially of school going children and pilgrims visiting the area.
It may be recalled that then Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Dr Pawan Kotwal had issued orders banning the cremation of dead on Devika beneath the holy Shiv Temple Purmandal in 2003 on the basis of representation received by him from the people of the area submitted to Divisional Commissioner Jammu.
The DC in his order has made it clear that the cremation of dead bodies at existing Shamshan Ghat is causing grave nuisance to the inhabitants of Purmandal in the shape of emission of foul smell, air pollution, water sources, besides mental agony and injury to the health of the people as at times some parts of dead bodies which remain un-burnt are dragged by the animals to the habitation and the locals have to arrange disposal of such parts at their own.
However after the violation of this ban order the residents of Purmandal submitted another memorandum to Divisional Commissioner, Jammu recently seeking his immediate intervention and enforcement of ban orders in letter and spirit.
Besides the local people the local unit of Shri Amar Kashtriya Rajput Sabha and Sarpanchs and Panchs have also made a representation to the Divisional Commissioner, seeking implementation of ban orders in letter and spirit.
Following these representations the Divisional Commissioner Jammu gave directives to DC Samba to impose ban on cremation of dead at Devika in view of the grave concern shown by the people.
The DC Samba has urged the SSP Samba to ensure that the ban is enforced in letter and spirit.
