Will Modi make Sushma, Raje, Irani invulnerable to Congress barbs?

All is not well with the Government of India headed by Narendra Modi. Though during the last over one year Modi has proved a meaningful head of the NDA Government this establishment has been rocked and rattled by one controversy or the other. It is time one forgets Ghar Vaapsi issue that had given a bad name to the BJP led NDA Government despite the fact that the programme had not received any blessings or support from Modi. This controversy was followed by the Land Acquisition Bill which the opposition Congress utilized effectively for painting the Modi led Government in black colours. Whatever may be the merits and demerits of the Land Bill the opposition blocked its passage forcing the Government to take the route of issuing ordinances. This programme also fizzled forcing the Government to seek opinion from a parliamentary select committee for making some changes in the Bill which could be acceptable to the opoosition and to those among the farmers who have been led to believe that the Government will acquire land from them forcibly thereby denying to them means of livelihood. Gradually the Modi led Government has been able to surmount these crises. But the latest issues pertaining to the Lalitgate in which the External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhra Raje, have been blamed for having aided the controversial former IPL Chief, Lalit Modi, in securing valid travel documents for travelling to the UK as his wife was being treated for cancer in a hospital in Lisbon. Soon after the reports revealed that Sushma and Raje had assisted the controversial Lalit Modi in securing travel documents for visiting Lisbon where his wife had been admitted for treatment to her cancer, the opposition parties, especially the Congress left no stone unturned in making Sushma and Raje vulnerable to the growing campaign for their resignation or for their ouster or for their sack. And the latest tirade from the Congress against Raje was in the form of a letter supposed to have been written by her in 2011 in which she had supported Lalit Modi's immigration application.The way the Congress has tried to turn the tide against Raje has forced the BJP to adopt a wait and watch policy despite the fact that the BJP leadership has questioned the authenticity of the letter. The controversy over Suhsma and Raje's role in facilitating Lalid Modi's valid travel documents which allowed him opportunity to fly to Lisbon had not yet died when the BJP led NDA Government was rocked by another controversy. This was in the shape of Aam Aadmi Party's demand for resignation or sack of the HRD Minister, Smriti Irani, for having given different versions on her academic qualification. In her election affidavit in 2004 Smriti Irani had stated that she had completed BA from Delhi University (Correspondence School) in 1996. In her affidavit in 2011 during nomination papers she filed for Rajya Sabha seat, she had had stated that she had completed B.Com (Part I) from Delhi University (Correspondence School). And in 2014 in her affidavit while contesting the Lok Sabha seat from Amethi she had stated that she had completed B.Com part I from school of Open learning from Delhi university.And rightly the Delhi High Court has agreed to hear a complaint against Irani over her educational qualification.The AAP has to be vocal and vigorous because the BJP campaign against its Law Minister, Rajesh Tomar, had led to his sacking after it was confirmed that his Law degree was fake.It is not yet clear how far will Modi and his close associates, including the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh,be able to ward off trouble to Sushma and Raje. Better would be to ask Sushma, Raje and Smriti to resign till the controversy over their role is settled. Continued controversy will lead to waste of the ensuing Monsoon session of Parliament and divert Modi Government's attention from Vikaas to making Sushma, Raje and Irani invulnerable to opposition barbs.
