Amarnath yatra begins; first batch of 1,280 leaves for cave shrine

Jammu/Srinagar, July 1: Amid tight security arrangements, the annual Amarnath yatra today commenced from Jammu as the first batch of 1,280 pilgrims left for the cave shrine in South Kashmir Himalayas.
"Amarnath yatra began from Jammu today. A batch of 1,280 pilgrims have left from Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu this morning for their onward journey to the 3,888 meters high cave shrine of Amarnath in Kashmir Valley," said Dr Piyush, Yatra officer and Additional Deputy Commissioner Jammu. The batch comprising 919 men, 191 women, 16 children and 154 sadhus left in a cavalcade of 34 vehicles guarded by heavy contingent of CRPF personnel from the base camp at 5:10 AM, a police officer said.
The cavalcade has already crossed Kud in Udhampur district, he said.
The yatra was flagged off by Jammu and Kashmir ministers Lal Singh, Sukhnandan Choudhary and Priya Sethi.
They said that the yatra has begun and all arrangements have been made for comfortable yatra of pilgrims, who have come from various parts of the country to pay obeisance at the cave shrine of Lord Shiva.The First batch of annual Amarnath Jii Yatris today reached Kashmir amid three tier security system from Jammu. The pilgrims are expected to move towards the sacred cave from Pahalgam and Baltal base Camps from early morning of July 2.
As the number of local militants in four districts of South Kashmir's Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama and Shopian is believed to have doubled or more than doubled this year, authorities have made three tier security arrangements for Yatris.
The authorities have deployed 55 security companies to ensure safe journey of Yatris this year. Helplines have also been set up to connect the yatries with their kith and kin.

In Kashmir annual yatra is scheduled for 59 days this year and it will begin from July 2 which according to Hindu traditions is auspicious day called 'Purshotam Purneema and will conclude on Shrawan Purnima on August 29,same day Festival of Rakhsha Bandan is celebrated across the country.
Official accounts reveal that so far this year total 2,04, 508 pilgrims opted for advanced registration while as other arround 22,104 pilgrims are scheduled to reach to cave via helicopter services from Baltal and Pahalgam to Panjtarni. Basic facilities which include power, water supply, ration and food supply items have already been delivered to all camps stalled whiles as medical camps have also been established at camps stalled so far. An official said that with good mobile phone connectivity rround 2,500 toilets and 245 washing spaces have been installed out of a total of 2,792 and 115 langar facilitators have already reported at camps. Pertinently lot of chaos was created over the issue of number days of annual Yatra after Separatist groups demanded curtailment of the yatra duration from 59 to 30 days and PMO in Prime Minister's office, Dr Jitendra Singh recently while talking to media persons said that Yatra can be conducted throughout the year.
