| Down with BJP, say people of Jammu | | Statehood the only way out | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 4: Anger against the BJP, a part of the ruling coalition in J&K, is brewing in Jammu region and brewing very fast. The general population has been cursing itself for voting for the BJP and openly bemoaning that they themselves are responsible for the shabby treatment they have been getting from the government since March 1. "We ourselves are responsible for our miserable plight. Down with the BJP that cheated us," they have been saying, adding that "if they are to preserve their self-respect, lead a dignified life and achieve a status in the Indian polity as its part and parcel, they have to end the age-old Kashmiri domination and hegemony over the state polity and economy".
"Separate Jammu state is the only alternative. We have to achieve the status of statehood at any cost. We can't accept the position of servitude and subordination for an indefinite period. Enough is enough. We want a dispensation that is of us, by us and for us and that is also nation-centric and committed to the territorial integrity of India. Why should our region play second fiddle to Kashmir? Why should we allow Kashmiri rulers to impose the Kashmiri will on us? Why should we come on to the roads again and again to get our genuine demands conceded or get our due share? Our region is rich in natural resources, including green gold and precious waters. We contribute more revenue to the state exchequer. We are not slaves. We are the master of our destiny. We founded the State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. We have been making sacrifices for the cause of the nation in J&K. We will shape and mould our own political and economic future ourselves within India and under the Indian Constitution, whatever it is," they have been saying. And their platform is the non-political AIIMS Coordination Committee (ACC).
This correspondent has been covering the ACC activities, including its corner meetings, right from the day of its inception. Though the ACC is a non-political outfit, all those who have been addressing the corner meetings are speaking political language and emphasizing and re-emphasizing that separation of Jammu region from the Kashmir Valley is imperative if Jammu region is to achieve a status similar to the one Kashmir achieved 67 years ago through its "politics of threat, deceit and blackmail".
The short point is that the people of Jammu region are fed up with the BJP, the Congress, the NC and similar other Valley-centric outfits and that they have come to the conclusion that severing all ties with Kashmir and adopting a very strong attitude towards the Valley-centric New Delhi are the only two options available to them to attain the status of statehood. Very interestingly, even those who were party to the anti-Jammu decisions taken in a most brazen manner during the earlier dispensations have also started airing similar views. Indeed, the State of J&K is heading towards disintegration. The immediate provocation, of course, is the manner in which the sanctioned AIIMS was snatched from Jammu and shifted to Kashmir. |
