Pak extends not only political & moral but material support to militants
7/23/2015 9:12:13 PM
On one hand Pakistan makes a plea to India to adopt the path of cooperation instead of confrontation with Islamabad,on the other Islamabad continues to air its pledge to extend moral, political and diplomatic support to the people of Kashmir in their struggle for securing the right of exercising their self-determination.Thank God Basit has deliberately forgotten to use word "material" support too.If such an attitude is maintained by Islamabad, there does not seem any purpose for resuming the process of dialogue. What is quite interesting i s the way Pakistan's High Commissioner to India,Abdul Basitt, has been showing total disregard to New Delhi's priorities, preferences and policies when he has been inviting Kashmiri separatists to some function held in the Embassy premises in New Delhi. It seems that Abdul Basit is not aware of the change of guard in New Delhi because he has insisted, during the last one year,on inviting Kashmiri separatists despite clear directions from New Delhi against engaging these separatists in any talks. And in August last the proposed foreign secretary level talks were called off by New Delhi because it felt enraged over the way Basit had ignored its instructions not to invite Kashmiri separatists.
And he repeated the mistake the other day when he had invited some Kashmiri separatists in connection with Eid Milan party.Thank God senior Hurriyat leader,Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who heads the conglomerate of the hardliners among the separatists, had announced he would not attend the party in protest against Pakistan's plea for resumption of dialogue, which it had made during meeting between Nawaz Sharif and Narendra Modi in Ufa in Russia, without laying emphasis on settlement of the Kashmir issue. It should not have served music to the ears of New Delh when Abdul Basit announced that Pakistan will continue to extend moral, political and diplomatic support to the people of Kashmir in their legitimate struggle for self-determination as provided in the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.Abdul Basit had said this while addressing an Eid Milan party at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi which was attended, among others, by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman APHC. While issuing this sermon he wanted India to adopt a path of cooperation and not confrontation. He believes that there was an appropriate atmosphere for holding the bilateral talks. Basit may be right to some extent when he claims that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was determined to promote peace between both the countries and hoped that both India and Pakistan would adopt the way of cooperation by leaving the way of opposition. If one believes Basit it means that Nawaz Sharif has no hold on the Army, the Pakistan Rangers and other extremists and agencies that act as handlers of militants operating in Jammu and Kashmir. In this context one does pose a question to Basit. If Nawaz Sharif has no hold on the Army what is,then, the purpose of holding talks with the Government headed by Sharif ? Again one does question Basit's statement that the current atmosphere is conducive for holding bilateral talks. How can the environment be conducive for talks when Pakistani forces keep on resorting to repeated ceasefire violations ? If Indian troops have retaliated ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces with force and fury why should Islamabad invite UN military observers to the border for assessing the situation when it knows that New Delhi has stopped recognising any role for the UNMOG in Jammu and Kashmir ?These are some of the irritants that have delayed resumption of talks.Despite these irritants New Delhi has agreed to reopen the channels of dialogue and it is hope that Pakistan, especially its troops, behave properly lest their misadventure should force India to call off the proposed talks.
