Farooq's faux pas on ISIS flag waving
7/26/2015 11:39:18 PM
When National Conference Presi
dent and former Chief Minister,Dr
Farooq Abdullah justified waving of ISIS flags in the valley, on the plea that by doing so the youth was simply trying to give vent to their frustration and anger,he was simply simplifying an issue that should have been condemned by him. He also stated that the anger on the part of youth in Kashmir was understandable because nothing was being done for them.Hence he believed that waving of IS and Pakistani flags was simply to display their anger. He also believes that by doing so the youth hoped they would be able to wake up the nation. Farooq Abdullah has suggested to the Government that it should look into the thing that are pinching the youth in Kashmir and take necessary steps to get these youngsters back to national mainstream. Well the NC leader's statement followed the incident where groups of youth waved ISIS flags soon after Friday prayers in Srinagar.Waving of Pakistani flags has been quite an old practice whenever groups of youth wanted to air their grievances.Waving of Pakistani flags had not stopped during the time Farooq Abdullah had headed the Government or during the six year NC-Congress regime headed by Omar Abdullah.Waving of Pakistani flags carried a deep political message as these flags were waved by those who did not accept the irrevocability of the state's accession with India.
IS or ISIS is a new phenomenon.Waving of ISIS flags did not carry any deep political significance but it was being done to confuse the security and intelligence agencies forcing them to believe that the ISIS unit has been established in the Kashmir valley when in reality there has been no infiltration of ISIS activists in the valley. If Dr Farooq Abdullah believes that those groups of youth that waved ISIS flags were simply voicing anger against the establishment in Srinagar he may be wrong because by waving ISIS flags ISIS activists may not come from Syria or Turkey to help the Kashmiri youth in fulfilling their dreams.Atleast those who have been waving IS flags should have known by now that ISIS activists have been in the forefront of those forces that were engaged in carrying out mayhem of muslims in various Islamic countries, including Syria,Iraq,Turkey,Egypt etc.Dr Farooq may be right when he says waving of ISIS flags is the outcome of display of anger and frustration of those boys who have failed toget rehabilitated properly.Well it is a sign of frustration and desperation otherwise devout muslims,as most of them are in Kashmir, would have never waved flags of ISIS that has been responsible for carnage of muslims in various Islamic nations. Since the rise of ISIS is a recent phenomenon Kashmiri boys would have waved ISIS flags even during the time when Omar Abdullah or Farooq Abdullah headed a colition Government.
Well there are critics of Farooq Abdullah who argue that by claiming that those who had waved ISIS flags were simply giving expression to their frustration may not be the case. Was the NC President giving vent to his frustration after his son and the National Conference lost power when people rejected it in 2015 election ?Argue his critics.
Farooq Abdullah has given a sound suggestion to the BJP-PDP coalition Government when he said that the establishment should try to redress the grievances of the youth in a bid to bring them back to the national mainstream. But at the same time he should not have justified the incidents of waving of Pakistani and ISIS flags He should know that the trouble in Rajouri was a reaction to the waving of Pakistani and ISIS flags in Kashmir. Though he is in the opposition with no love for the Muftis Dr Farooq, who is the tallest political figure and a seasoned politician, should stop playing politics and suggest to the Government ways and means for reducing the level of anger and frustration. If he does so he is sure to add to his political weight. And he should know it that by justifying any anti-Government or anti-India activities Dr Farooq could be lending, though inadvertently, support to India's enemies. It is time for Farooq Abdullah to pocket his frustration and wait for the right moment to stage a comeback.
