Srinagar, July 26: Protests broke out in the Maisuma and adjacent areas here after the body of a youth was fished out from the Jhelum river in Shadipora-Sumbal area in North Kashmir's Bandipora district.
Eye-witnesses told Early Times that people of the Mandir Bagh locality in the summer capital came out in protest after the news spread in the area that a youth of the locality has been killed in police custody. Relatives of the youth identified as Owais Ahmad Fafoo said that he was arrested by the police and later on got killed in the custody.
"This is cold blooded murder and not a simple case of death. Owais was picked up by the police some days before the Eid and today his body was recovered. The police personnel involved in the incident should be booked under law and there should be no concession in this regard," said a group of protesters.
The locals said that Owais was picked up along with another youth. The other youth was released few days back but only after the palms of the police personnel were greased, said the locals. They demanded a high level probe in the incident so that the responsibility is fixed and action is taken against the 'erring' cops.
As soon as the news of Owais's death spread people of the nearby localities of Gaw Kadal and Maisuma came out and started carrying out protests against the incident. They were demanding that the cops responsible for the killing of Owais should be immediately arrested and then trial be carried out against them.
Some of the protesters alleged that Owais was arrested by cops of Ram Munshi Bagh police station and that the Station House Officer of that police station should be immediately removed from his present place of posting. The protesters also alleged that the state government has no control over the police with the later ruling the roost.
The protesters clashed with the police during the course of the day and the ding dong battle carried on for more than four hours in the affected areas. Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel lobbed dozens of smoke shells on the protesters in order to disperse them. The situation remained volatile in the areas with both the public and private transport getting affected.
In the meantime it has been learnt that police has ordered for a probe in the incident so that the real picture emerges out. MLA Habba Kadal, Shamim Firdous has condoled the death of the youth and demanded a high level inquiry in the incident.
