Najar out to challenge Salhuddin's 'supremacy' | Hizbul rebel group eyes Srinagar | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 26: Despite top police officials claiming that "Srinagar is safe" and there are no militants present in the city, security has been beefed up amid inputs that rebel group of Hizbul Mujahideen led by Qayoom Najar operating in north Kashmir are planning to strike in the city. A top police official while talking to Early Times said: "We are sure that no militants are present in Srinagar but the splinter groups active in north Kashmir sometimes manage to enter Srinagar and carryout the attacks." He said that Police have identified the people who carried out grenade attacks on cell phone showrooms in Karan Nagar area on last Friday (July 24). "The grenade attacks in Karan Nagar area were carried out by the Hizbul militants who are associated with Qayoom Najar group. They had arrived from north Kashmir and carried out attacks in Karan Nagar close to Batmaloo area. After throwing the grenades they managed to flee back to north Kashmir," sources added. Pertinently, the self styled Chief Commander of Hizbul-Mujahideen Syed Salahuddin last week had issued a statement claiming that Qayoom Najar stands expelled from the militant outfit. Salahuddin had claimed that Najar and his men carried out attacks in Sopore area on mobile phone towers and were involved in the killing of innocents in north Kashmir. Sources said that militants who attacked the mobile phone showrooms in Karan Nagar area were "actually planning a big strike" but due to the security measures in the city they (militants) changed their plan and hurled grenades just to send a message to Syed Salalhuddin that he expelling Najar from the militant outfit hardly makes a difference. "We have taken the grenade attacks in Karan Nagar seriously as it could be the beginning of the gang war between the two groups," sources added. They said that Najar faction in order to establish its writ and give a befitting reply to the militants based in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) is planning to carry out a major strike in Srinagar. "Police have asked the politicians and workers of mainstream parties not to venture out without security and avoid visiting vulnerable areas," sources added. Sources said that attacking the showrooms of cellular companies at Karan Nagar was just a "test dose." "Qayoom Najar faction is desperate to make its presence felt. As per the intelligence inputs this group may carry out attacks in Srinagar or can target either separatists or the mainstream politicians," they added. Sources said, the security grid across north Kashmir and in Srinagar city has been activated to ensure that the militants of this splinter groups don't manage to enter the city. "Najar faction has taken the recent statement of the Hizbul Chief about their suspension very seriously," they said. A top police official while talking to Early Times said: "There is nothing to worry but we cannot be complacent. The splinter group led by Qayoom Najar has become a headache for Hizbul Mujahideen as it has raised the banner of revolt against Salahuddin. We have to ensure that war between these two factions should not disturb the peace." |
