Early Times Report

JAMMU, Aug 25 : Padmashree Geeta Chandran, a world famous exponent of the Indian classical dance Bharatanatyam, is currently in Jammu and has a busy schedule of lecture-cum-demonstration performances in a number of leading schools in the city under the aegis of the 'SPICMACA Y' - an eminent national level organization known for proliferating awareness about Indian classical forms in dance and music among the youth of the country for several years. The performances in Jammu are being orchestrated by Dr Sapna Sangra, Coordinator of J&K chapter of SPlCMACA Y and Dr Seema Rohmetra, Coordinator for Jammu region.
On the second day of her visit, Geeta Chandran left the children of KC Public School spell- bound with her performance hosted by KC Sports Club. Chandran's one hour long lecture-cum- dance performance revolved round the exposition of Bharatanatyam as basically an amalgamation of three major tenets of classicism, namely 'bha', 'ra' and 'ta' which stand for 'bhava", 'raga' and 'taal' respectively. Interspersing her verbal explanations with demonstrations, she articulated a series of highly evocative cameos based on classical themes, mainly related to Lords Shiva and Krishna.
She dwelt at length on Bharatanatyam as a purely classical form on Indian dance and the time, dedication and devotion required in attaining a degree of perfection in it. She also held a demonstration with her disciple Radhika to illustrate to the students of KCPS, the rigorous regimen required in the learning of this great classical dance form. She concluded her performance by answering a few questions posed by the students.
Her musical ensemble consisted of extremely talented artists with S Venkateswaran as the lead vocalist, S Shankar on the Mridangam and Rohit Prasanna on the flute.
