Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 25: Jammu and Kashmir is the only low prevalence state with 0.8 percent natives detected with deadly AIDS virus. India on the other hand has emerged third uppermost country with six out of ten persons infected with the virus.
According to the statistics provided by J&K State AIDS Prevention and Control Society, there are only 4500 cases detected with AIDS in Jammu and Kashmir with 630 in Kashmir valley followed by 3128 in Jammu province.
However out of 4500, 745 detected patients in both the provinces have left the treatment (ART) midway for unknown reason.
It is pertinent to mention here that the first case of AIDS in India was detected in the year 1986; the total number of people infected with deadly disease till 1995 was 45 lakh that sent alarming bells throughout the country.
In the end of 2013, more than 700,000 people were on anti-retroviral therapy, the second largest number of people on treatment in any single country.
In Kashmir valley there are total 638 people detected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) followed by 3128 in Jammu, and the total number of deaths occurred over the years are 75 in Kashmir and 527 in Jammu respectively.
The report further revealed that in Kashmir the total number of males infected is 328 followed by 86 females, 4 transgender and 15 children below 12 years age.
Similarly in Jammu province the ratio of male infected with AIDS is 1802, females 1105, transgender 6, children 93.
A senior medico in JKSAPCS claimed that the main reason of disease in Jammu and Kashmir is rapid flow of tourists and AIDS infected transporters.
She also asserted that the person working outside the state is one of the major reasons of spreading AIDS.
"There are many people who have left the treatment midway due to social stigma, else anti-retroviral therapy is free of cost in both the regions, although people have started realizing the sensitivity of the disease who take regular treatment in ART centres SKIMS Kashmir and GMC Jammu," she told 'Early Times'.
She said that people need not to panic as the treatment available in ART centres is quite effective and the person who is detected with HIV can live a normal life up to ten to twenty years provided he take regular treatment.
She said that they have also sent a proposal to issue a unique social security card to affected people so that they can avail free ration and transport facility besides monitory assistance.
The virus changes very rapidly and is easily able to evade many of the body's defense systems.
There are two types of HIV; they are HIV-1 and HIV-2 and they have many subtypes.
HIV-1 is the cause of the current worldwide pandemic while HIV-2 is found in West Africa but rarely elsewhere.
"Blood transfer, through the sharing of drug taking equipment, particularly unsterilized needles, carries a high risk of HIV transmission. Around 30 percent of global HIV infections outside of sub-Saharan Africa are caused by injecting drugs, and it accounts for an ever growing proportion of those living with HIV. 1 HIV transmission is a risk when taking drugs by means other than injecting, but people who inject drugs (PWID) have the highest risk," she said.
