Defensive Madhav plays safe, leaves things to J&K Govt
Detention, release flip flop

Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 25: The controversy relating to the detention arrest of Hurriyat leaders on Thursday and their subsequent release in a dramatic manner within 120 minutes is refusing to die down. Serious and searching journalists continue to quiz senior BJP leaders to know under what circumstances they were arrested and released so that the nation came to know the truth. Today at 7.30 pm, NewsX interviewed one of the main architects of the controversial agenda of alliance, Ram Madhav, who is also BJP national general secretary and in-charge Jammu & Kashmir's party's affairs.
Kartikeya Sharma of the NewsX repeatedly asked Madhav to explain the detention and release flip flop, but Madhav thought it prudent to remain on the defensive. He played safe. He told NewsX that "he was not fully aware of the circumstances under which Hurriyat leaders were arrested and released" and that "he (Kartikeya Sharma) should talk to the Jammu & Kashmir Government to know the whole truth". He also played safe when asked "if the BJP, which is in the Jammu & Kashmir Government, had been taken into confidence before the Hurriyat leaders were arrested and released". He, however, gave NewsX to understand that "there might have been talks between the PDP and the BJP on the issue". And, that's all.
Madhav was also asked to speak on Pakistan, Hurriyat, Jammu & Kashmir Government and agenda of alliance. He didn't endorse the view that the cancellation of National Security Advisor-level talks was a "failure". At the same time, he took the opportunity to tell Pakistan to "rethink". He referred to the intent and spirit of Ufa (Russia) declaration of July 10 and defended the stand of Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj.
On Pakistan's and Hurriyat leaders' insistence for a meeting between them prior to the NSA-level talks, Madhav said that "the Jammu & Kashmir was a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan and Hurriyat had no locus standi as far as the talks between the two countries were concerned". "No State Government in the country has any power to interfere in matters concerning India's foreign policy," he said, and added that "even the BJP, the PDP, the NC and the Congress had no role to play in this regard". However, Madhav said that the "Hurriyat leaders can meet the Jammu & Kashmir Government if they have any problem". But more than that, he said Shabir Shah, who went all the way from Srinagar to Delhi to meet the visiting Pakistani leader, but was arrested at the Delhi airport itself, was not a "leader of any consequence" and that "Geelani, Mirwaiz and Yasin Malik are the leading faces of Hurriyat Conference".
On the agenda of alliance and performance of the PDP-BJP coalition Government, Madhav said: "Much more could have been done on the developmental front, but because of certain reasons it couldn't be done". "There is much time at the disposal of the Jammu & Kashmir Government and he is confident that it would deliver. Much needed to be done to mitigate the hardships of the flood victims. The State Government is asking for a package. New Delhi would surely take an appropriate decision on the demand," he said.
The manner in which he responded to the NewsX queries, it was clear that he didn't want to open up. For, had he opened up, he would have either embarrassed the RSS-BJP or the PDP-BJP coalition Government in the State. He knew the ground realities and many other things and it was not that simple for him to say what he was supposed to say to put things in perspective.
