JCO killed in cross LoC firing in Nowgam sector

KUPWARA, Aug 25: After a brief lull, Pakistan today resorted to firing killing a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in cross-LoC firing in Nowgam sector of Kupwara district in north Kashmir.
A senior army official told early Times that, "The JCO was hit by a Pakistani sniper near the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowgam sector and later succumbed to injuries.
Official said, "Pakistan started firing at Indian posts at 1:00am on Tuesday killing the Army officer," reports said. "The official was hit by a sniper fire from the Pakistani side when he came out of his bunker.
"Army has already averted several infiltration bids made from the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) in North Kashmir especially in Keran, Tanghdar and Nowgam sectors this year, said official.
After the incident the troops guarding the Line of Control have been asked to remain extra vigilant while moving around the areas close to LoC in north Kashmir.
'Two border security forces troopers were killed when India and Pakistan armies exchanged gunfire in the same sector on July 5 and 9 this year, sources informed.
However authoritative sources said that Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) Naib Subedar Krishana Singh, 42 of 3 Kumaon regiment was critically injured when Pakistani troops fired at post in Nowgam sector along the Line of Control (LoC) on Tuesday afternoon.
The JCO, who was hit on the head, was immediately moved to nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
Singh a resident of Uttrakhand was guarding the Badal Post near the LoC when the incident took place.
It is also learnt that the soldiers manning the fence also retaliated the fire and the intermittent exchange of fire was going on till the last reports came in.
Pertinently Pakistani troops yesterday violated ceasefire by resorting to firing and mortar shelling on forward posts and civilian areas in Poonch district of Jammu.
It is learnt from defence sources that there have been 52 violations of the border ceasefire agreement of 2003 by Pakistan in August and over 245 ceasefire violations this year so far.
Pakistan yesterday resorted to firing of automatic weapons and shelling of 60 mm mortar bombs on the forward posts and civilian areas from 7 pm to 7: 20 in Balakote area, said defence sources.
He said that, "Army troops guarding the border, effectively and appropriately replied back. The fresh ceasefire violation has occurred after a few days of lull along LoC in Poonch district.
On August 19, Pakistan Rangers resorted to three rounds of fire along International Border (IB) in Samba sector around 10:30 without any casualty to anyone, sources added.
