| 'Strong Jammu means strong Indian nation' | | Assembly of Jammu | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 25: Things in the neglected and discriminated against people of Jammu region are changing and changing very fast. There are cogent reasons to believe that the fed-up-with-the-present system of which the "betrayer" BJP is a part, the angry people may rise in revolt and demand status of statehood for the region. And the party which could take the lead could be the Jammu & Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP), which last Saturday organized an assembly of prominent citizens to ascertain their views on the plight of the people of Jammu region. The assembly expressed the view that statehood for Jammu region was the only solution to its age-old problem and that the existing politico-constitutional and administrative set-up had outlived its utility, as it had only helped Kashmir, promoted communal and separatist politics in the Valley and rendered Jammu irrelevant for all practical purposes. "Let's be very clear about our political demand. There should be no confusion. Demand for statehood is not anti-constitutional. Let's demand status of statehood for Jammu region," it was said in the Assembly of Jammu.
Not one, but speaker after speaker lambasted the BJP and charged it with bartering the interests of the people of Jammu region in its desperate bid to grab some power in J&K. "The BJP has cheated the people of Jammu region. It has betrayed them and violated the Jammu mandate. It threw into the dustbin its so-called nationalist ideology for power. It has not only maintained the existing politico-constitutional status, but also described Pakistan and separatists in Kashmir as stakeholders. It betrayed Jammu by rejecting its demand for the constitution of delimitation commission forthwith. It let down the refugees from West Pakistan by rejecting their demand for citizenship rights and by coming out with an atrocious sustenance and livelihood formulation. It got mandate from Jammu to empower it politically and economically, but it ditched them by throwing in their lot with Kashmir by handing over everything to it. Jammu region houses more than 1.5 million refugees, who had all voted for the BJP hoping that it would redress their grievances, but after coming into power, it left them in the lurch," many speakers in the Assembly of Jammu said, adding that the "Jammu region needed a regional outfit with a nationalist outlook" and that "we should not accept anything less than statehood for Jammu region".
"Jammu region is India's Kurukshetra. Strong Jammu would mean strong Indian nation and weak Jammu would mean an opportunity for the anti-India forces to balkanize India. Jammu is in danger. And since Jammu is in danger, the Indian nation is also in danger. To save the Indian nation, make Jammu strong and the best way to make Jammu strong is to achieve for it the status of statehood, nothing less," many in the Assembly of Jammu also said. It is a different story that what transpired during the Assembly of Jammu went unnoticed.
If one gives any credence to what transpired during the assembly of Jammu, then it can be said that a movement in Jammu region for a full-fledged statehood is in the offing and the party in the forefront would be the JKNPP. Indeed, the JKNPP can achieve the goal provided it didn't dither like it did in the past many a times. There is political vacuum in Jammu province. All the major players in the region have lost their confidence. The JKNPP can fill the vacuum subject to the condition that it implements in letter and spirit the sense of the Assembly of Jammu. |
