Jammu, Aug 25: An autorickshaw driver has alleged that he was beaten up by the Trikuta Nagar police at the instance of autorickshaw drivers who operate from railway station. Surinder Kumar (40), son of Des Raj who owns an autorickshaw (JK02AX/4882), alleged that he was beaten up in the lockup of Trikuta Nagar police station by seven police personnel, including a senior police officer. He said when he yesterday morning went to the railway station to drop a passenger, he had arguments with another autorickshaw driver Tony, who "operates from the railway station autorickshaw stand". In the scuffle, his clothes were torn. "Both of us were then taken to the Trikuta Nagar police station where seven cops gave me a sound beating," he alleged. Surinder alleged that some of the autorickshaw drivers, who "operate from railway station behave like goons and enjoy close proximity with police. They don't allow any autorickshaw driver to pick passengers from outside the railway station". After his release on bail today, he got himself admitted to the GMCH here for treatment. SDPO (east) Rafiq Manhas, when contacted, denied the allegations made by Surinder and claimed that he was mentally upset.
