Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 1: Adding chaos to the already perturbed system of education, the state government has ordered the verification of the certificates of the teachers recruited by the SSRB besides subjecting the ReTs to scrutiny.
Scores of teachers recruited by SSRB have been asked to re-submit their qualification certificates so that same could be verified by the department.
Earlier, the education minister Naeem Akhtar ordered the scrutiny of the certificates of the ReTs.
The department was sceptic about the authenticity of the degrees possessed by the ReT teachers. Though the move invited least resentment by the teachers at large but the new order is about stir the hornet's nest.
The degree certificates of the general line teachers are usually verified thoroughly by the concerned agencies including the police department and SSRB itself.
"How could there be a scrutiny of the degrees of the general line teachers. Their certificates are already verified by the SSRB during the selection process.
Now again going for the same process is wastage of the official energy," said one senior official wishing not to be named.
Meanwhile, sources in the education department revealed that there was some discussion going on about verifying the certificates of the ReT teachers, though there has been no formal communication issued so far over the issue but it is most likely that the degrees of some general line teachers would be scrutinized besides that of the ReTs.
"The discussion over the issue did take place and it was resolved that the general line teachers who have been promoted as masters would have to face scrutiny of their documents followed by the action if forgery is found," sources said.
However when contacted, one of the senior officers of the Education department, Rouf Ahmad Shahmeeri, who presently is posted as CEO Ganderbal told Early Times that there is no such order received so far by the government and that the department is currently verifying the certificates of the ReTs as ordered by the state government earlier.
Furthermore, scores of general line teachers expressed resentment over the government's move of re-verifying their degree certificates terming it a move tantamount to undermine the very authority of the SSRB- the second largest recruitment board of Jammu and Kashmir after the Public Service Commission (PSC).
They stated that such a move of the state government would not only render SSRB an office sans any credibility but would also put a question mark over the recruitment process in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
They however, remarked that if any person has re-submitted the degree certificates after the recruitment, same could be verified by the government at any time. But scrutinizing at large the degrees of everyone is something that could have serious ramifications, teachers said.
