Colonel killed, Cop injured in Kupwara gunfight

KUPWARA, Nov 17: A Colonel was killed and a polkice man sustained injuries in a fierce gunfight with the militants at near the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district on Tuesday afternoon.
A top police official told early times over the phone that, "in the initial exchange of firing between the two sides an army colonel Santosh Mahadik, commanding officer (CO) of 41 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) sustained serious injuries when a search party he was leading came under heavy fire from a group of 4-5 militants in the dense forests of Haji Naka.
The commanding officer was airlifted to an Army hospital in Drugmulla area in Kupwara district for advanced treatment but he later succumbed to his injuries, the official said.
The official said, "A joint team of Army's 41 RR, Para commandos and Special Operation Group (SOG) had intercepted the group of Lashkar-e-Toiba militants on Monday late evening.
The militants opened heavy fire triggering of a brief encounter at Behak forest area, which is still underway, the official said.
Official further added that the group had managed to escape again while taking advantage of darkness in the area last evening, however today afternoon, the group was again intercepted by the Para-troopers and army's 41 RR in the forest area.
The militant group opened indiscriminate fire upon the troops resulting in injuries to two soldiers including commanding officer of 41 RR identified as Santosh and SOG personnel, the official informed.
However sources said that, "the same group of militants broke the security cordon after another encounter in the same area last week. The group is believed to have crossed over from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) into Indian Territory a few weeks ago.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara Aijaz Ahmad confirmed early times that, "An army's commanding officer (CO) of 41 RR, Santosh got killed adding that, while as one police man of SOG wing Showkat Ahmad was injured during an encounter which raged on Monday late evening in Manigah area of Kupwara district.
SSP said that, "The whole area has been cordoned off after the encounter raged on and the search operation was also in progress when reports last came in.
