Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 17: A probe ordered into the medical books scam in Jammu University in July this year appears to have been an eyewash, as recommendations of the probe panel are gathering dust in the Vice-Chancellor’s Secretariat. Notably, Director of the varsity's CDC, Jai Kumar, had purchased books worth Rs 40,000 for his doctor daughter from the exchequer after influencing Chief Librarian. After Early Times exposed the scam in July, JU authorities ordered a probe. A three-member committee comprising Prof Kuldeep Sharma, Dean Life Sciences; Prof Naresh Kumar, and Prof Kulwant Singh was constituted by the JU administration. The panel submitted its report in September, and since then no action has been taken by the VC. It was learnt that the Director CDC had tried to influence members of the probe panel. Sources said the committee had held both CD Director and Chief Librarian responsible for misusing their positions. "We could not establish evidence against both (Director CDC and Chief Librarian)," the committee says in its report. It, however, adds that it could neither deny their involvement in the scam. "Books purchased need to get checked from experts, and on their suggestion action be taken," the committee had recommended. Sources said instead of acting on the recommendations of the committee, attempts at top level were being made to hush-up the case. "To complete paper work, warning may be given to them. Nothing new is expected from the administration, as both Jai Kumar and Chief Librarian have good relations with top administration including the VC," sources said. "As in previous cases of corruption, this enquiry will also die silent death. The halfhearted approach of the administration is encouraging corruption in the university," they added. No senior official of the varsity was available for comment. |
